Flat Racing column 2026: Previewing Sandown's Bet365 Mile

In his latest Focus On The Flat column, Races Now's Adam Smith tees up a fascinating-looking Bet365 Mile at Sandown on Friday, which he believes has the potential to be one of the best Group 2 contests in some time.

Bet365 Mile has all the ingredients to be a classic

“It’s a Group 1 in all but name”, proclaimed my esteemed colleague on the weekly Races Now YouTube show earlier this week.

That was in reference to the bet365 Mile, which might well be the best Group 2 staged in the UK this decade. A field of six set to go to post at 3:00pm on Friday, four of whom have won a Group 1 race in the last 12 months.

2026 Bet365 Mile - Runner-by-runner analysis

Field Of Gold is the 5/4 favourite at time of writing. An electric winner of two Group 1s last summer at the Curragh and Royal Ascot, although subsequent events have proven the horses he thrashed on those occasions to not be up to much. Cosmic Year (second in the Irish Guineas) and Henri Matisse (second in the St James’s Palace) are unlikely to be remembered as good horses in years to come.

Field Of Gold’s 2025 season finished with a whimper at Goodwood and back at Ascot, though context is crucial – he was the victim of a draw bias at the latter and picked up an injury when 1/3 to win the former. It’s great he’s coming back as a four year old but he has questions to answer to my eye. He might well be right out of the top drawer. But I’m in no rush to risk my money to find out at 5/4 in such a stellar field.

Zeus Olympios (5/2) started his career later than most and only has four runs to his name, improving exponentially in August and September last year from a Thirsk novice win to an impressive Group 2 win at Newmarket, where he looked a Group 1 winner in the making.

Beating Opera Ballo (8/1) in that most recent win. As a result of that Joel Stakes win, Zeus Olympios carries a three pound penalty here – advantage Field Of Gold on that front.

Opera Ballo is worst off at the weights given he carries 2lbs more than Zeus Olympios and 5lbs more than Field Of Gold. That is likely to be a significant factor here.

He is clearly very talented but found it difficult to behave himself in his early days. Charlie Appleby has clearly worked hard since in a bid to make him settle in races and he does at least come here with fitness on his side as a result of two wins in Dubai over the winter. Most recently seen winning what we would call a soft Group 1 in January, hence he carries that Group 1 penalty here.

Off level weights, he’d have a right chance but that extra weight could prove pivotal. This could well be a warm up for the Lockinge Stakes for Opera Ballo where he would run off level weights with his rivals. All six of the field are entered in the Lockinge (Group 1) on May 16th.

Never So Brave (13/2) won the first ever Group 1 over seven furlongs staged in the UK at York last year and was also a victim of that Champions Day draw bias at Ascot (100/1 stall one beat 12/1 stall two).

This runner doesn’t carry any penalties despite winning a Group 1 on his penultimate start, has the stamina for a round mile and Andrew Balding is smashing in the winners at this early part of the season. I’d happily back Never So Brave in match bets vs Opera Ballo and even consider backing him each way, only two places in a field of six.

Dancing Gemini (12/1) won this last year before coming a neck second in the Lockinge a month later, but there is ample evidence he isn’t quite up to winning at the top level, and this is a top level race. Plus, he might want softer ground anyway.

And the final shout out goes to Cicero’s Gift, who loves Sandown and bagged a first Group 1 at 100/1 in the aforementioned QEII at Ascot last October. That performance was 10lbs or more better than anything he has every produced on the track. Fluke? The market thinks so, given he’s 28/1.

Who wins the 2026 Bet365 Mile?

Field Of Gold might be a properly good horse but very much has to prove it here and this season to my eye.

Zeus Olympios made Opera Ballo look average in that Joel Stakes last September. The lingering doubt in my mind is the 3lbs penalty Zeus carries and it’s always difficult to be confident about any horse having their first run of the year.

You can hear them now... trainers saying “he’ll come on for that run, all eyes on the Lockinge”, etc. It’s a shame we don’t know how fit they are beforehand!

In conclusion, Never So Brave is the each way bet for me. A proven Group 1 performer yet carries no penalty. Might Zeus Olympios or Field Of Gold be better horses than him in time? Possibly yes, but now is the time to strike with a trainer in flying form and a horse that usually runs well first time up.

I've also got another two official selections incoming for this Sandown card, which you can catch on our usual Thursday Betting Show later this evening. See you there!
