Jonny Clayton rewarded followers last week with a superb 14/1 winner in Brighton. He showed real character in the final, coming from 5-2 down against Michael van Gerwen and sealing the win with back-to-back 180s in the decider.
That result has tightened the market considerably this week, and finding value is more difficult – particularly with a draw that is heavily stacked in the top half.
Luke Littler faces Gerwyn Price in what is the standout quarter-final of the night. The winner will then take on either Luke Humphries or Gian van Veen, the latter of whom has the benefit of home support in Rotterdam. It’s a brutal section, with three of the strongest players all clustered together.
In the bottom half, we get a repeat of last week’s final as Van Gerwen takes on Clayton. MVG will have the crowd firmly behind him this time, and he looked in control for large spells in Brighton before letting it slip. The question is whether he responds, or whether Clayton continues to capitalise on those lapses.
The final quarter-final sees Stephen Bunting face Josh Rock. Rock has now won three consecutive quarterfinals and looks to be building momentum. With the top half so competitive, this half of the draw offers the best opportunity to find a bigger-priced finalist.
Gian van Veen would have been of interest on home soil, but at 10/1, the price doesn’t reflect the difficulty of his route – likely needing to beat Humphries, then either Littler or Price, just to even reach the final.
The bottom half looks more appealing from a value perspective. While Van Gerwen may well bounce back, there are still question marks over how he handles the pressure in front of a home crowd, particularly given his past performances in Rotterdam.
Jonny Clayton, on the other hand, continues to quietly deliver. He doesn’t need to dominate – he simply punishes mistakes, and that’s proving effective in this format. If he can navigate past MVG again, he has a strong chance of making another final.
At 9/1, it’s not the standout price of last week, but it’s still backable given his current level. Keeping faith with the Ferret makes sense at the prices.
