This week carries an extra layer of uncertainty with Gian van Veen’s fitness still in question. Even if he does feature, match sharpness and physical condition are obvious concerns after surgery, which could heavily influence that section of the draw.
Last week produced a high standard, with four players posting 100+ averages in the quarterfinals and three of the four semi-finalists maintaining that level. The standout storyline, though, was Gerwyn Price’s collapse in the final. After averaging 103 and 109 to reach it, he stormed into a 5-0 lead over Luke Littler before losing 6-5.
That result underlined Littler’s composure and ability to win without hitting top gear — claiming the title with a sub-100 average. It also sets up a potential rematch narrative should the draw fall that way again.
In the bottom half, Littler faces Stephen Bunting, while Price could meet a compromised Van Veen. That gives Price a strong route to the semi-finals and possibly beyond.
The top half looks more competitive. Luke Humphries was again consistent last week, averaging 103 and 101, but ran into a red-hot Price. Michael van Gerwen remains dangerous, though not at his dominant best.
Jonny Clayton, however, looks well placed. He faces Josh Rock, who is struggling badly in this year’s Premier League, including a 6-0 defeat last week. Clayton has already beaten Rock 6-2 in this campaign and has won their last two meetings overall.
Clayton’s confidence should also be high after reaching the Euro Tour final in Belgium, narrowly losing 8-6 to Humphries. Importantly, he showed just two weeks ago that he can beat both Humphries and Van Gerwen on the same night when winning in Nottingham.
There’s a strong case for backing the Welsh duo this week. Gerwyn Price benefits from a favourable draw, especially if Van Veen is either absent or below full fitness. With a potential semi-final clash against Littler looming, he’ll also be motivated to avenge last week’s defeat.
Jonny Clayton, meanwhile, has a very winnable opening match and a proven recent pedigree against the top names. At 9/1, he represents solid each-way value given his path and current form.
1pt e/w – Gerwyn Price to win night 8 – 7/1 (Skybet)
0.5pts e/w – Jonny Clayton to win night 8 – 9/1 (Bet365)
