Reports have emerged that Manchester United are considering selling their homegrown midfielder Kobbie Mainoo before the summer transfer window slams shut.
Mainoo has found himself out of the United first-team picture under current boss Ruben Amorim and The Athletic now suggest a sale in the final days of the summer window is being strongly considered.
With PSR rules making the sale of a homegrown academy player more favourable than the sale of external purchases, selling Mainoo would give Amorim and United more room to bring in additional signings – although fans would undoubtedly be disappointed to see such an exciting youth prospect depart Old Trafford.
So, where could Mainoo be headed? We examine the latest betting odds on his next club (prices correct as of August 27th, 2025) and dig into five of his most likely destinations.
There is currently a lot of conflicting opinions among bookmakers about where Mainoo will go if a transfer is sanctioned – but William Hill make Real Madrid their current 2/1 favourites.
Sky Bet agree, making Los Blancos their 15/8 market leaders too, though Bet365 are clearly less convinced having placed the Spanish giants at 25/1 rank outsiders to make a swoop.
BetVictor offer a slightly different angle, going 4/1 that he joins any Spanish club before the summer window closes – which may interest some punters who want to keep options open with Atletico Madrid also strongly linked.
By joining Real Madrid, Mainoo would be following in the footsteps of some Red Devils icons who have traded Old Trafford for the Bernabeu, including David Beckham, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Daily Mail reported that both Real and Atletico Madrid are 'stepping up their interest' in Mainoo (August 26th) but that Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace is their preferred target.
It would seem that Real Madrid are certainly in the market for a midfielder, with Dani Ceballos apparently on the verge of completing a loan to Marseille, with the French club having the option to make a move permanent next summer.
Mainoo appears available should they need to act quickly and boasting immense top-level experience for his age, the switch could suit all parties.
There is yet more disagreement among bookmakers when it comes to Newcastle as a potential destination for Mainoo.
Given Bet365 are as short as 1/5 on him staying put at Old Trafford this summer, their prices on all other destinations are quite generous and a move to Newcastle is considered second most-likely for them at 8/1.
The Toon also feature prominently in BetVictor's market as 4/1 joint-favourites, while William Hill go 10/1 on the midfielder ending up at St James' Park before the window closes.
Sky Bet do not currently have Newcastle in their market but that could quickly be added if wheels do start to turn.
Newcastle's activity in the next week or so will largely depend on the future of Alexander Isak, with the Swedish striker's touted move to Liverpool proving the saga of the summer.
If Isak does head for Anfield, it will give Eddie Howe extra funds to spend and Mainoo's age and profile does appear a strong fit with how Newcastle have recruited since their October 2021 takeover by Saudi Arabia's Private Investment Fund.
One team who are always willing to give youth a chance in the modern era, Chelsea have been long linked with a move for Mainoo and remain interested, according to recent reports.
The Blues, like United in many respects, have languished well below their former position as title contenders in recent years but appear to finally be on an upward trajectory under Enzo Maresca having won the Club World Cup this summer, backing up a Europa Conference League win last term.
Mainoo would face stiff competition to break into the Chelsea engine room, though, with the likes of Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo having impressed in recent times.
There also remain question marks over whether United would wish to potentially strengthen a top-four rival – particularly one who they have endured so much bad blood with over the last two decades.
However, the loan move of Jadon Sancho to Stamford Bridge last summer shows that all options remain on the table and West London could well prove the perfect place for Mainoo to kickstart his fledgling career.
A move to Italy has become an increasingly popular move for struggling Premier League stars and Juventus could be the most appealing of the Serie A options for Mainoo.
The Old Lady have been struggling by their own high standards in recent times, now having gone five seasons without winning the Scudetto having lifted nine straight titles between 2012 and 2020.
Reports in Italy suggest Juve have been monitoring Mainoo's situation for some time and Bet365 are a best-priced 18/1 on them pouncing before the deadline.
William Hill go 7/1 and Sky Bet go 12/1, while BetVictor once again give the attractive alternative of backing Any Serie A club as Mainoo's next destination at 5/1 – which keeps other linked parties such as Roma and Inter Milan on side.
Mainoo can take inspiration from his former teammate Scott McTominay, who left Old Trafford to join Napoli a year ago and has shone in Italy, leading his side to the title last term with a string of spectacular midfield displays.
It's no secret that Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba is high on Manchester United's wishlist – so could Mainoo find himself used as a makeweight in that deal?
Such a prospect has been touted in the media after news of Mainoo's uncertain future emerged and it is easy to see the logic, with the Seagulls considered shrewd operators in the transfer market under the watch of their genius owner Tony Bloom.
If Brighton believe they can revive Mainoo to the level of his breakthrough campaign, netting a huge profit on Baleba while also picking up the England international could make sense.
Bet365 have Brighton as 12/1 to land Mainoo this summer, while Sky Bet are significantly shorter at 13/2. BetVictor and William Hill do not currently have them in their lists, however.
Generally, doing business with Brighton is a tough task for top six clubs. United have supposedly been priced out of a deal for Baleba, so even a proposal including Mainoo would likely need to be supplemented with significant cash.
But stranger things have certainly happened and as the deadline gets increasingly closer, all options remain on the table.
England international Mainoo, 20, made his Red Devils debut as a 17-year-old in February 2023 and enjoyed a stunning breakthrough campaign in the 2023-24 season, which included scoring the winning goal in the FA Cup final against bitter rivals Manchester City.
Though the youngster now finds himself out of favour, United's current boss Amorim is under significant pressure himself and it would not be all that surprising if the Portuguese coach had departed Old Trafford before the transfer window re-opens again in January 2026.
Mainoo needs to be playing football, with a lack of game time not only set to stunt his development but also badly harm his prospects of landing a place in Thomas Tuchel's 26-man England World Cup squad next summer.
He is currently a best-price 6/4 with both William Hill and BetVictor to make the cut for the Three Lions in the USA – but with huge competition in the middle of the park, not playing will quickly see those prospects diminish.
The tempting option for United in the short term may well be to cash in, largely due to the aforementioned PSR benefits of selling homegrown talents. However, this short-sighted approach could end up costing them more money in the long run.
Mainoo's talent is not in question and if he gets back to his best, he will potentially save United the headache of signing a £100million midfielder. So, loaning the youngster out this window seems the shrewdest move for all parties.
If United don't want to strengthen a divisional rival, a move to Spain or Italy makes the most sense and playing in a new culture and environment is only likely to improve Mainoo's development – of which United can reap the rewards of in the future.
