In Sunday’s 2 pm GMT kick-off, Aston Villa host Manchester City at Villa Park in what promises to be a cracking Premier League encounter.
With Liverpool’s recent slip putting City right back in the title race, Pep Guardiola’s side will be out to keep the pressure on. Villa, meanwhile, will want a strong response after their midweek Europa League defeat to GA Eagles.
Odds Now's football tipster Terry Foord gives his analysis ahead of the big game and picks out his best bets.
Aston Villa’s 2–1 defeat to Go Ahead Eagles was certainly not in the script. After taking an early lead, they missed chances, wasted a penalty, and ultimately fell short against a Dutch side sitting twelfth in the Eredivisie. That loss leaves Villa tenth in their Europa League group and heading into this one on the back of a disappointing midweek showing.
Before that setback, Villa had been enjoying a perfect October — three wins from three in the Premier League. Unai Emery’s men haven’t lost in the league since the 31st of August, when they were beaten 3-0 by Crystal Palace. Since then, they’ve drawn two and won three of their last five, climbing to eleventh in the table and regaining some consistency domestically.
Manchester City, meanwhile, are firmly back in the title picture. Just three points separate them and Arsenal, with goal difference almost identical. Since their 1-1 draw with Arsenal, City have won all three Premier League matches and five of their last six in all competitions, with only a European draw against Monaco (2–2) halting an otherwise flawless run — spoiled late by a 90th minute Eric Dier penalty.
The arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma has clearly made a difference. City look stronger defensively and more composed under pressure. They’ve conceded only once in their last three league games while scoring eight. At 7/2 for the Premier League title, Pep Guardiola’s side still look decent value given their form and growing momentum.
The recent head-to-head record between these two is balanced. Both sides have won two of the last four meetings, with little to separate them overall.
Goals have been a common theme in this fixture — both teams have scored in eight of the last nine encounters, while over 2.5 goals has landed in seven of the previous ten. All signs point towards another open and entertaining clash at Villa Park.
This is a tough one to call, with both sides arriving in solid Premier League form. Based on the stats, over 2.5 goals looks the most likely outcome. Aston Villa have conceded in three of their four home matches, but they’ve also looked strong going forward — and I fancy them to find the net again on Sunday.
Erling Haaland has been nothing short of ridiculous this season, scoring 11 goals in just eight matches. It’s hard to oppose him in any goalscorer market right now.
In the bet builder, I like the look of Aston Villa to have the most corners. Pep Guardiola’s side aren’t known for racking them up — just ten in their four away games so far — while Villa have more than doubled that tally at home with 21 across their four fixtures.
2pts – Over 2.5 goals – 3/4 (10bet)
1.5pts – Erling Haaland to score – 5/6 (bet365)
0.5pts – Both teams to score, Haaland to score & Villa most corners 11/2
