Sunday’s 4:30pm GMT kick-off takes place at Villa Park as in-form Aston Villa host Manchester United in the Premier League. It's a game that is certain to have its fair share of drama and tension.
Odds Now football tipster Terry Foord looks at the potential betting insights in what should be a riveting clash between two teams keen to pick up as many points as possible over the festive period.
Aston Villa are now firmly in the title race after yet another impressive victory, this time against a dogged West Ham side. The 3–2 win at the London Stadium saw Villa come from behind twice in a competitive encounter. It marked their sixth consecutive Premier League win and a ninth straight victory across all competitions.
Unai Emery’s side have been particularly strong at Villa Park. They’ve won six of their eight home matches this season and have suffered just one defeat, which came back in late August. Along the way, they’ve beaten both Manchester City and Arsenal on home soil, and confidence is clearly high — Villa will feel capable of beating anyone right now.
Manchester United were involved in a chaotic goal-fest at Old Trafford last time out, drawing 4–4 with Bournemouth. The match swung back and forth, with both sides holding the lead at different points. Bournemouth arrived in poor form, and United will understand defensive improvements are urgently needed if they’re to achieve anything of note this season.
Goalkeeping concerns resurfaced once again, with Senne Lammens looking unconvincing at times despite producing a sharp late save to deny David Brooks. Ruben Amorim continues to tweak his system, and while it sparked a wave of chances in the first half, the defensive frailties remain obvious. United have now conceded twenty-six league goals — a tally worse than all but six teams in the division.
Manchester United boast a strong recent record in this fixture, winning five of the last six meetings. However, Villa did hold United to a 0–0 draw the last time the sides met at Villa Park and, in their last three home games against United, have recorded one win, one draw, and one defeat.
Looking at recent meetings at Villa Park specifically, both teams have scored in four of the last five, while over 2.5 goals have landed in four of those five — suggesting goals at both ends once again.
This shapes up as an open contest, but the key difference is Aston Villa’s ability to defend. Despite winning six of their eight home matches, they’ve conceded just six goals in that run — an excellent return.
Manchester United have scored at least two goals in eight of their last ten Premier League matches, while Villa have done so in five of their last six. Goals should be on the menu, but Villa’s defensive structure gives them the edge.
I must side with Aston Villa. They’re in the form of their lives and, while United can pose a threat going forward, Villa’s solidity at the back should be the decisive factor.
From a player angle, Matheus Cunha appeals. He already has fifteen shots on target this season, including three against Bournemouth and two against Wolves. He’s also scored in each of his last two appearances against Aston Villa while playing for Wolves.
2.5pts – Aston Villa to win – 23/20 (Bet365)
0.5pts – Aston Villa to win, both teams to score & Cunha 1+ shot on target – 9/2 (Bet365)
Total Staked: 3pts
