Chelsea and Liverpool face off at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, October 4th at 5:30 pm BST. Chelsea, who sit eighth, and have lost two on the bounce, while Liverpool are top of the table despite suffering their first defeat of the season against Crystal Palace last Sunday.
Odds Now's football tipster Terry Foord shares his insights ahead of the big game and picks out his best bets.
Chelsea got their Champions League campaign back on track on Tuesday with a 1-0 home win over Benfica. It was a much-needed boost for Enzo Maresca’s side after losing three of their previous four matches — their only win in that run being a 2-1 EFL Cup victory over League One club Lincoln.
In the Premier League, Chelsea are winless in three and have only beaten sides in the bottom half of the table — West Ham and Fulham. After six league games, they would’ve expected more than eight points, especially as they haven’t faced anyone who finished higher than 8th last season. They’ve also conceded seven goals in their last three Premier League matches.
Liverpool, in my opinion, have overachieved so far. They won their first five games, including an impressive 1-0 win over Arsenal. But against Newcastle, they scored in the 100th minute, and against Burnley, they won with a 95th-minute penalty. That’s a four-point swing that could’ve had them sitting around sixth rather than top.
Liverpool have since lost their last two games. They were beaten by Crystal Palace — ironically in injury time from an Eddie Nketiah goal — and then lost 1-0 away to Galatasaray in the Champions League.
The Reds have been grinding results out, but they’ve now conceded in their last five matches and in seven of their nine games this season.
Chelsea won the most recent meeting between the sides — a 3-1 home win on May 4th — but Liverpool were already 15 points clear with the title wrapped up by then.
Before that game, Liverpool had an excellent record against Chelsea, winning the previous three and going ten unbeaten in the head-to-head before that defeat.
Five of the last eight Premier League meetings between the two have ended in draws.
Both teams will probably feel they’re meeting the other at a good time. Liverpool have lost their last two, and Chelsea have lost their last two Premier League games.
Chelsea keep shooting themselves in the foot with the number of red cards they’ve picked up. You could argue they’d have got more out of the games against Man United and Brighton without them.
Both teams to score looks like the angle here. Chelsea have only failed to score at home once, and Liverpool have scored in every Premier League match this season.
I also like Marc Cucurella to have a shot in the game. He’s had an effort in five of Chelsea’s last six matches and gets forward constantly, especially at home.
3pts – Both Teams To Score – 1/2 (William Hill)
2pts – Marc Cucurella over 0.5 shots – 4/5 (Bet365)
1pt bet builder – Cucurella 1+ shots, btts and Chelsea over 1.5 cards – 5/2 (Bet365)
Total staked - 6pts
