Portugal vs Slovenia Team News

Portugal winger Rafael Leao is available for selection again after missing the 2-0 defeat to Georgia through suspension. Manager Roberto Martinez heavily-rotated during the loss after his side were already confirmed as group winners but is expected to return to a full strength eleven in this one.

Meanwhile, Slovenia will be without left-back Erik Janza, who picked up his second yellow card of the tournament against England and will now serve a one-match suspension.

Portugal vs Slovenia Analysis and Predictions

Portugal, like many of the so-called big-hitters, didn't set the world alight during the group stage. An unconvincing performance against the Czech Republic culminated in a 2-1 win courtesy of a late strike from Francisco Conceicao on matchday one, but after handily dismantling Turkey, they succumbed to a stunning 2-0 loss against an unfancied Georgia side on Wednesday evening.

True, Martinez had made eight changes ahead of the Georgia match, but the Portuguese will know an improvement in performance is needed if they are to go deep in the tournament. They also find themselves on the tougher side of the draw, alongside the likes of Germany, France and Spain.

While those potential match-ups may halt any repetition of their 2016 heroics, Slovenia shouldn't provide any stumbling blocks here. Matjas Kek's side exceeded expectations in Group C, drawing all three of their matches against Denmark, Serbia and tournament favourites England to progress as one of the best third-ranked sides.

The Slovenians will rightly be jubilant at making the knockouts for the first time but we expect any celebrations to come to an end on Monday evening. Slovenia conceded a worrying amount of chances against Denmark and Serbia, averaging 1.62 expected goals against (xGA), and face a Portugal side packed with world-class talent in attacking areas.

Sure, Kek's men did well to limit England to just 0.8 expected goals last time out, but the English have struggled creating chances throughout the group stage. Portugal will surely pose a more formidable threat and we expect them to reach the quarter-finals in relatively convincing fashion.
