Switzerland vs Italy team news

Switzerland right-back Silvan Widmer misses out through suspension after picking up two yellow cards in the group stage. Leonidas Stergiou replaced the right-back in their draw with Scotland on matchday two and is likely to fill in as replacement here once again.

Predicted XI: Sommer; Schar, Akanji, Rodriguez; Stergiou, Xhaka, Freuler, Aebischer; Ndoye, Embolo, Vargas

Italy are not blighted by any injury concerns at the time of writing. Lazio winger Mattia Zaccagni could be rewarded with his first start of the tournament following his injury-time heroics versus Croatia last time out.

Predicted XI: Donnarumma; Darmian, Bastoni, Calafiori; Jorginho; Di Lorenzo, Dimarco, Barella, Zaccagni; Scamacca, Retegui

Switzerland vs Italy Analysis and Predictions

The tie is an intriguing one from the offset but could turn out to be a difficult watch for the neutral.

It's fair to say that neither side are renowned for their goal-scoring exploits and, in fact, only two of their combined six group stage matches saw more than two goals scored in total.

The Swiss overcame what looked a tricky Group A, going unbeaten across their three matches and were minutes away from taking all three points off tournament hosts and eventual group winners Germany. A 92nd-minute equaliser from Niclas Fullkrug might have stolen their thunder on the night but was a timely reminder of the threat they pose to the competition's so-called 'big boys'.

Like Switzerland, Italy also managed a runners-up finish in Group B, courtesy of a 98th-minute equaliser from Mattia Zaccagni which salvaged a 1-1 draw with Croatia in their final outing. That result left them on four points, two ahead of the third-placed Croatians, who bowed out of the tournament in the cruelest of fashion.

Luciano Spalletti's side will need to improve on their group stage performances if they are to avoid defeat to their neighbours — but the Italian guile can never be underestimated in this kind of contest.

True, Spalletti's men have been underwhelming so far but they still navigated a route out of a group many were dubbing the 'Group of Death' heading into the competition, while few gave them a chance at lifting the trophy three years ago.

The Azzurri lack superstars but boast ample top-level experience and can never be written off, which makes them most likely to progress to the quarter-finals with a narrow win at the Olympiostadion.
