Kasey Keller Exclusive: 'Ange is the man to get Spurs on track'
Kasey Keller Exclusive: 'Ange is the man to get Spurs on track'

Former Tottenham goalkeeper Kasey Keller insists Ange Postecoglou is still the man to take the club forward despite recent results.

Spurs were forced to settle for a point in a 1-1 draw at Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday, five days after squandering a two-goal lead to eventually lose 4-3 at home to bitter rivals Chelsea.

Their form has left them in the bottom-half of the Premier League table and outside the automatic qualification spots in the Europa League.

Keller: Brighton and Chelsea losses 'shouldn't be happening'

The Chelsea defeat was the second time this season that Postecoglou's side have thrown away a two-goal lead.

Spurs went into half-time 2-0 up away at Brighton at the start of October, yet still ended up on the wrong end of a 3-2 defeat.

Postecoglou has doubled-down on his approach to persevere with his attacking football, even when a more defensive mindset might be more suitable to see games out.

However, many have criticised the decision and accuse the former Australia boss of being naive.

Ex-keeper Keller, who was speaking exclusively to Odds Now via William Hill Vegas, agrees in-game adjustments are necessary if Spurs are to compete for trophies and a place in the top four.

He said: "He [Postecoglou] has to adjust his tactics during games. To be 2-0 up against Brighton and Chelsea and lose both isn't good.

"I don’t know whether it’s the players and relationships on the pitch, but this shouldn’t be happening."

Manchester United Carabao Cup quarter-final can be the turning point

Spurs' poor form has even lead to questions over Postecoglou's future at the club.

The 59-year-old is currently 4/1 to be the next Premier League manager to leave their post, though Keller remains confident he can turn results around.

"You can’t keep firing managers, so Ange is the main to get Spurs back on track and he can do it.

" Firstly, get all your best players on the pitch. This is key. Then you can start to build up a good run of form.

"Spurs have a crucial game against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup quarter-final [on 19th December] and can reignite their season with a win."

Tottenham have already knocked out eight-time Carabao Cup winners Manchester City this season, recording a well-earned 2-1 home victory over the reigning Premier League champions back in October.

The win was then followed by a stunning demolition of City, this time at the Etihad, where Spurs ran out comfortable 4-0 winners.

Many thought the win could kickstart Tottenham's season, only for it to be followed by disappointing showings against sides they were expected to beat.

Like many associated with Spurs, Keller couldn't hide his frustration at his old side's inconsistency, particularly given sides like Brighton, Brentford and Fulham all find themselves above the North Londoners.

"Spurs have been inconsistent the past few weeks and it’s one step forward and two steps back.

"One step forward was a brilliant 4-0 win at Manchester City when everything went right. Maddison played a super game and defensively Spurs put everything on the line to keep that clean sheet and to record such a big win.

"Then you think Spurs can follow this up with a good run of form. But to follow up with three home performances which include a loss to Ipswich, draw to Fulham and then a loss to Chelsea being 2-0 up.

"I know there are injuries, but Spurs need to be able to perform better."

Postecoglou and co hope to return to winning ways against bottom of the table Southampton on Sunday evening.

More dropped points at St Mary's Stadium would be the lowest point yet for Spurs, who enter 3/4 favourites against Russell Martin's side.
