Newly promoted Leeds host Champions League qualification chasers Newcastle in a Premier League clash at 5:30 pm BST kick-off on Saturday night.
Our football tipster, Terry Foord, delivers his football betting tips for this huge clash, including 23/20 and 14/1 bets worth backing.
Saturday evening takes us to Elland Road for a 5:30pm BST kick-off, where Leeds United host Newcastle United in the Premier League.
Daniel Farke's team already have three points on the board thanks to a gritty opening-day win, while Eddie Howe’s side are still chasing their first victory. Both teams will see this as a big opportunity to pick up valuable points.
Leeds opened the campaign with a 1-0 win over Everton, showing defensive organisation while registering 21 shots. A penalty was needed to secure the points, but Farke will have been encouraged by the energy and intent.
A heavy 5-0 defeat followed at Arsenal, but survival won’t hinge on results at the Emirates. Leeds’ season will be judged on fixtures like Everton at home.
Newcastle remain winless after a 0-0 draw with Aston Villa and a cruel stoppage-time defeat to Liverpool. They failed to make their man advantage count against Villa, while at St James' Park, they created enough chances to merit a draw before being undone in the 100th minute.
Discipline has been an issue – Gordon’s red card against Liverpool left them with an uphill battle – but Howe will expect those performances to now translate into points, especially against newly-promoted Leeds.
Three of the last four meetings have ended in draws. Their most recent clash at Elland Road (May 2023) finished 2-2. Newcastle have been winless in their last 10 matches across last season, pre-season, and the opening two fixtures.
Newcastle: New signing Nick Woltemade is unavailable, Gordon is suspended, and Joelinton is sidelined. Sandro Tonali faces a late fitness test, Fabian Schär is fit, but Alexander Isak won’t feature.
Leeds: Midfielders Ethan Ampadu and Ao Tanaka are out with knee injuries, while summer signing Noah Okafor faces a late assessment.
With Anthony Gordon suspended, Anthony Elanga should shoulder more of the attacking responsibility here.
He hit 24 shots on target for Nottingham Forest last season and tested Liverpool’s keeper twice last weekend in that epic 3-2 defeat.
I expect him to be heavily involved again – making his shots on target line of great appeal.
New Leeds signing Anton Stach is worth keeping an eye on from a betting perspective.
At Hoffenheim last season, he produced 2.17 xG, taking 35 shots and getting 10 of them on target across 30 games. This term, he’s already had four attempts (one on target), all coming against Everton.
Leeds are averaging plenty of efforts despite their lack of goals, and with Newcastle conceding seven shots on target across their first two matches, Stach landing 2+ on target here at 14/1 looks a value play for a small stake.
I fancy Newcastle to edge this for their first win of the season.
Leeds will bring energy at Elland Road, but the Magpies’ quality in depth – even without Gordon – should tell.
Harvey Barnes, Jacob Murphy, and Elanga have the pace and movement to cause problems, and this looks like the moment Newcastle finally get their campaign going.
2pts – Newcastle United win – 23/20 (Betfred)
1pt – Anthony Elanga 1+ shot on target – 3/4 (Betvictor)
0.5pts – Anthony Elanga 2+ shots on target – 4/1 (10bet)
0.25pts – Anton Stach 2+ shots on target – 14/1 (bet365)
Total stake - 3.75 pts
