Marseille and Villarreal meet for the first ever time in European competition in their Europa League round-of-sixteen first leg on Thursday.

Marseille secured their place in the last 16 after beating Shakhtar Donetsk in the play-off round, winning 5-3 on aggregate.

The French side beat Clermont 5-1 at the weekend, with summer signing lliman Ndiaye netting in back-to-back games. Striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang also found the net, taking his tally five goals in his last five matches.

The win made it back-to-back wins for Marseille who currently sit seventh in Ligue 1, three points off Lens in sixth and five off Nice in fifth.


Villarreal:

2021 winners Villarreal progressed after topping their group ahead of Rennes, Maccabi Haifa and Panathinaikos.

The Spaniards dispatched of Granada with ease on Sunday with a 5-1 home victory in their most recent fixture. Norwegian striker Alexander Sørloth scored a hat-trick to take his tally to 14 goals for the season.

The win also ended a run of three consecutive draws for the Yellow Submarine.

Team News:

Marseille will be without defender Amir Murillo and midfielders Valentin Rongier and Bilal Nadir through injury. Geoffrey Kondogbia and Luiz Henrique could come into the side after starting on the bench against Clermont.

Villarreal come into Thursday’s match with a host of injuries, missing full-backs Juan Foyth and Alfonso Pedraza, and attacking talents Yeremy Pino and Denis Suarez. Forward Goncalo Guedes could come into the side after coming off the bench to score in the weekend’s win at Granada.
