Newcastle United host Arsenal at St James’ Park on Sunday, 28th September, with kick-off at 4:30pm.
Odds Now's football tipster Terry Foord shares his insights ahead of the big game and picks out his best bets.
Newcastle have made an average start to the season, having failed to win any of their opening three Premier League matches.
Looking back, a 0-0 draw with Aston Villa looks even worse given Villa’s issues in front of goal — and especially after they went down to 10 men. The Magpies then lost 3-2 to Liverpool before being held to another disappointing 0-0 by Leeds United.
Eddie Howe’s side do seem to raise their game for the big occasions, with improved performances against the likes of Liverpool and Barcelona in the Champions League.
But three goalless draws — against Bournemouth, Leeds, and Aston Villa — highlight their problems in attack, particularly without Alexander Isak.
They did at least get off the mark last time out at home, beating Wolves 1-0 at St James' Park. It wasn't the most convincing victory but will have done plenty for their confidence.
Arsenal, meanwhile, looked on course for a second defeat of the season when they trailed Manchester City 1-0 at the Emirates. Erling Haaland had given City the lead, but Gabriel Martinelli rescued the Gunners with a dramatic 93rd-minute equaliser.
Mikel Arteta’s side have lost just once this season, a 1-0 defeat to Liverpool.
That’s also the only away goal they’ve conceded in four matches across the Premier League, EFL Cup, and Champions League combined.
Mikel Arteta will be targeting three points here to keep pace with Liverpool, and with fixtures against West Ham, Fulham, and Crystal Palace coming up, this is a key game to maintain momentum.
Newcastle have a solid recent record against Arsenal.
Although the Gunners edged a 1-0 win at St James’ Park towards the back end of last season, Newcastle had won the previous three meetings without conceding a goal – though it’s worth noting that two of those came in the League Cup.
In the Premier League at St James’ Park, the last five encounters have produced three wins for Newcastle and two for the Gunners.
Goals have been scarce in this fixture, with under 2.5 goals landing in each of the last four meetings and in 10 of the last 11 overall.
The value looks to be on Under 2.5 Goals. It’s landed in 10 of the last 11 meetings between these sides, and with Arsenal showing strong defensive form this season, another tight contest feels likely.
In eight of the last 10 clashes, the winner has kept a clean sheet, so I’ll also take a small punt on Arsenal to win to nil.
For a player angle, Martín Zubimendi appeals. He’s had six shots in his last four Premier League outings, including two on target against Nottingham Forest. At 12/5 for a shot on target, that looks like a solid play.
3.5pts – Under 2.5 goals – 4/5 (Bet365)
1pt – Arsenal win to nil – 27/10 (Bet365)
0.5pt – Martin Zubimendi over 0.5 shots on target – 12/5 (Bet365)
Total staked - 4.75pts
