Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off at 12:30pm GMT takes place at St James’ Park as Newcastle host Chelsea in the Premier League. It's a clash where both managers will be desperate to pick up the win.
Odds Now football tipster Terry Foord looks at the potential betting angles in what promises to be an intriguing match-up.
Newcastle currently sit twelfth in the table after a narrow 1–0 away defeat to local rivals Sunderland. It was a tight contest in which Newcastle had more shots on target (2–1) and 53.4% of the possession. However, a rather bizarre own goal from Nick Woltemade proved decisive and handed Sunderland the bragging rights.
In general, Eddie Howe’s side have been poor away from home, with just one win in eight matches, so the result was not a huge surprise. Returning to home comforts should help the Magpies. They’ve recorded five wins from eight at St James’ Park and sit comfortably inside the top six for home form.
Chelsea, meanwhile, have moved into the top four following Crystal Palace’s defeat to Manchester City. Their 2–0 home win over Everton last time out was the Blues’ first Premier League victory in four matches, further highlighting what a strange season it has been, where a team can go three without a win and still find themselves in a Champions League position.
Despite that inconsistency, Chelsea will arrive full of confidence thanks to a very solid away record. They’ve won four of their eight away matches, losing just twice, a return that places them second in the away form table. Even with apparent tension between Enzo Maresca and the board, Chelsea will be satisfied with their current position — sitting in the top four, reaching the EFL Cup semi-finals, and remaining firmly in contention in the Champions League.
Newcastle have won the last two meetings between these sides. At St James’ Park, they’ve won the last four, while Chelsea’s recent victories in this fixture have all come at Stamford Bridge since 2022.
Looking purely at Premier League meetings, over 2.5 goals have landed in four of the last ten encounters, while both teams have scored in four of the last five.
This looks like a classic both teams to score fixture. We’ve seen BTTS land in four of the last five Premier League meetings between these sides. Newcastle have scored in every home match they’ve played this season, while Chelsea have failed to score just once away from home.
Newcastle have registered 45 shots on target across their eight home matches, averaging 5.6 per game. Chelsea have produced 40 shots on target from their eight away matches, averaging 5.0 per game. With those numbers in mind, I’ll add four or more shots on target for each side, along with a card apiece, into the mix.
At a bigger price, I’ll take a small half-point angle involving Newcastle. St James’ Park is a notoriously tough place to go, and with Newcastle winning the last four home meetings between the sides, there’s enough there to take a chance.
Adding Newcastle to have the most shots on target and Chelsea to receive the most cards boosts the price to 5/1. Chelsea have already picked up thirty-one yellow cards and four reds this season.
3.5pts – Both teams to score – 4/7 (Bet365)
1pt – Both teams to score, both teams to get 1+ cards, both sides to get 4+ shots on target – 21/10 (Bet365)
0.5pts – Newcastle to win, Newcastle most shots on target & Chelsea most cards – 5/1 (Bet365)
Total Staked: 5pts
