Relegation-bound Southampton hope to end their dismal run when they host Europe-chasing Newcastle on Saturday afternoon.

Odds Now's Brad Walker (@brad_TWalker) has taken a closer look at the match-up to devise where the best value lies.

Odds Now's Southampton vs Newcastle betting tip

Newcastle were caught cold in a 4-1 home defeat to Bournemouth last weekend, but couldn't have asked for a more favourable fixture to bounce back in than this one.

Opponents Southampton look hapless, having lost 10 of their last 12 league matches. In fact, each of their last five have ended in defeat and leave them pinned to the bottom of the table on a measly six points.

The defensive record of Ivan Juric's side speaks for itself. Only Wolves have conceded more than the 50 goals shipped by the Saints, which equals out at an average of 2.27 per game.

They've also picked up just two clean sheets so far in the league and, despite some promising signs in the second half of their 3-2 loss to Nottingham Forest last week, Southampton remain a near cert to drop back down to the Championship.

Meanwhile, the Bournemouth loss brought an end to Newcastle's impressive six-match winning streak but the Magpies have only lost 1 of their last 13 meetings with this weekend's opponents.

They've also won three of their last four at St Mary's.

Only six sides have scored more than Newcastle's 38 goals in the English top-flight this term, which equates to an average of 1.73 per game.

Eddie Howe's side have also failed to score in all but one of their away outings and face a Southampton side who have shipped over 2.5 goals in six of their ten home matches so far.

There have also been over 3.5 goals in total in each of the hosts' last four matches, suggesting another high-scoring encounter is in store here.

Of course, Newcastle are well-poised to return to winning ways despite their pitfalls last weekend simply because they're facing one of the worst sides in Premier League history.

Combining that with over 3.5 goals, which has come in for exactly 50% of Southampton's home games, at a best price of 9/5 looks to be the sensible play.
