Sunderland and Leeds continue the festive footballing feast when locking horns at the Stadium Of Light on Sunday afternoon (kick off 2pm GMT).

Odds Now football tipster Terry Foord looks at the potential betting angles in what promises to be an intriguing contest between two newly-promoted sides suffering contrasting campaigns thus far.

Sunderland vs Leeds betting preview – Sunday, December 28th 2025

Key Stats & Analysis

Sunderland came into this festive gameweek sitting inside the top six of the Premier League and just two points off the top four.

It’s been a truly remarkable start to the season for the Black Cats, built largely on their excellent home form. They remain unbeaten at the Stadium of Light – a record matched only by Arsenal.

Under the clearly talented head coach Regis Le Bris, Sunderland have scored at least two goals in four of their five home wins, while defensively they’ve been outstanding. Their xGA (expected goals against) at home stands at just 5.04 across eight Premier League matches — an average of 0.63 per game.

Leeds’ away form tells a very different story. The Whites have lost six of their eight away matches this season, drawing one and winning just once. Only basement side Wolves have a worse record on their travels.

A major issue has been their lack of goals on the road, scoring just seven times in eight matches while conceding a whopping 19 times.

Overall, Daniel Farke can still be satisfied with Leeds’ return to the Premier League, though. They sit six points clear of eighteenth-placed West Ham in a safe spot and boast a far superior goal difference.

The Yorkshire giants have won two and drawn two of their last four matches, but as mentioned, rotten form away from home the picture is far from convincing ahead of their trip north.

Head-to-Head

These two sides know each other well from their time in the Championship last season. Leeds arguably hold a slight edge in the recent head-to-head, having lost just one of the last six meetings. However, that sole defeat came at the Stadium of Light — an important factor here.

Over 2.5 goals has landed in the last two meetings. Both teams scored in each of those matches. too. Leeds have been involved in open games lately, with over 2.5 goals landing in eight of their last nine matches in all competitions.

Sunderland vs Leeds betting angles

I like Sunderland in this one and I’m happy to take the 6/4 on offer at time of writing about a home win.

At a bigger price, I’ll also have a smaller stake on Sunderland to win with both teams scoring.

The hosts will be without a few players due to AFCON, so may be a bit more vulnerable than usual at the back, while we’ve seen both teams score in the last two head-to-head meetings.

Leeds have made a tactical tweak to their formation that’s seen them play with more attacking intent. Their recent result against Crystal Palace was excellent, and overall, their last four matches have been strong.

However, three of those games were played at the fortress of Elland Road. Away from home, the problems remain, and I think Sunderland can get the job done here.
