Wales are just two wins away from back-to-back World Cup appearances as they host Bosnia-Herzegovina at the Cardiff City Stadium on Thursday night at 7:45pm GMT in a crunch contest.
Odds Now expert football tipster Terry Foord provides his betting insights and tips for this highly-anticipated 2026 World Cup Play-Off Semi-Final.
This is a huge occasion for Wales and Craig Bellamy, with a place in the play-off final against Italy or Northern Ireland on the line. Crucially, that potential final would also be on home soil, adding even more incentive for a side that thrives on the energy of a raucous Cardiff crowd.
Wales fell short at the group stage in 2022, drawn alongside England, Iran and the USA. If they make it Stateside this summer, they will believe they can go further – but first things first, they must navigate this semi-final, from which they are expected to progress.
The Welsh come into this ranked 35th in the world, significantly higher than Bosnia, who sit 71st. Home advantage is also a major factor, too with the Dragons' partizan crowd often acting as a genuine twelfth man.
Bosnia, however, are no pushovers. They have not qualified for a World Cup in 12 years but have consistently reached the play-offs for major tournaments. Unfortunately for them, they have fallen at the semi-final stage each time - losing to the Republic of Ireland (2016), Northern Ireland (2020, on penalties) and Ukraine (2024).
Their qualification campaign was solid enough. Bosnia won five of their eight group matches, losing just once and pushing Austria all the way. In fact, they were leading Austria in their final group match until the 77th minute, showing they can compete with strong opposition.
The head-to-head record favours Bosnia, although it is largely outdated. The two sides last met in 2015, with Bosnia winning 2-0 in a European Championship qualifier.
Across four meetings, Wales have yet to record a win, with two defeats and two draws. However, given the time gap and squad turnover, those results carry limited relevance for this encounter.
Wales’ home form is difficult to ignore, with five wins from their last six competitive matches in Cardiff. That alone makes them worthy favourites to progress.
Bosnia’s attacking capability suggests they can get on the scoresheet, though. They scored freely during qualification and possess experienced forwards capable of troubling defences.
The main play logically seems to be the Welsh win inside 90 minutes, with added value to be found when combining that with both teams to score.
For a Bet Builder angle, Harry Wilson stands out as the key man. The Fulham attacker was outstanding in qualification, particularly when netting a hat-trick against North Macedonia, and has contributed nine goals and three assists in his last 12 matches. He looks the most likely to make the difference here.
Edin Džeko, despite his age, remains Bosnia’s focal point and should register a couple of attempts. Bosnia’s relatively low corner count away from home also provides another angle to boost the odds.
2pts – Wales to win – 5/6 (Ladbrokes)
1pt – Wales to win and both teams to score – 10/3 (Bet365)
0.5pts – Harry Wilson to score, Harry Wilson 2+ shots, Bosnia under 5 corners and Edin Dzeko 2+ shots – 5/1 (Bet365)
Total staked - 3.5pts
