After a goal-fest of an opening weekend in the Premier League, we’re treated to another Friday night feast as West Ham United take on Chelsea in an 8 pm BST kick-off at the London Stadium in a tasty London Derby.
Odds Now’s football tipster Terry Foord has three tips for the contest.
Both teams were winless in the opening week and without a goal to their name, so they will see this as a prime opportunity to kickstart their season.
West Ham come into this match after a very disappointing first outing, where they were easily beaten 3-0 by newly-promoted Sunderland.
If Hammers fans didn’t think they’d have a tough time this season before the kick-off, they certainly do now. That result shook the Premier League outright relegation odds with bookies.
Sunderland came into the match handing debuts to seven new faces but made light work of their established opponents.
This is Graham Potter’s first full season with West Ham, but you can feel the daggers coming out already. He’s already had the dreaded “vote of confidence” from board members, and fans are calling for his head.
West Ham lacked desire last week, and the formation simply didn’t work. They looked stretched throughout, and they were weak in the air, with 5ft 9in Eliezer Mayenda outjumping 6ft 2 Nayef Aguerd for the opening goal.
Meanwhile, Niclas Fullkrug’s struggles up front were reflected in their paltry 0.56 expected goals (xG) total.
Chelsea also failed to score in their opener, a 0-0 draw against FA Cup & Community Shield winners Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge.
Palace had good moments and an Eze goal disallowed, but in general, Chelsea dominated possession, produced 1.37xG and had 19 shots (3 on target).
Liam Delap could feature earlier in this contest after his fellow new forward Joao Pedro managed only two efforts in a quiet display.
Brazilian winger Estevao should also get more minutes, while Nicolas Jackson is available again after a suspension.
West Ham were 17th in the table last season for their home form, with just five wins from 19, with three of those home wins coming in the first two months of the season.
They only outscored the bottom three and had a -11 goal difference on their own patch.
Chelsea, on the other hand, won an impressive eight of their 19 matches away from Stamford Bridge, finishing just one point away from Manchester City in the away table.
The Blues have won seven of the last 10 meetings between the pair, with the last three finishing in emphatic 5-0, 3-0 and 2-1 Chelsea wins.
We’ve also seen over 2.5 goals land in five of the last six clashes.
With goals, cards and corners all likely, these markets look the best route for value.
Though Chelsea enter as rightful favourites, the Hammers have scored in their last six at the London Stadium and will be desperate to give the fans something to cheer about – so both teams finding the net looks likely.
El Hadji Malick Diouf looks like one of the few who can spark something in West Ham’s attack and impressed in pre-season. He had a shot cleared off the line and three efforts overall against Sunderland.
At 2/1 to have more than one shot here, I think he’s overpriced. Especially with the ‘sub on, play on’ offer.
West Ham had seven corners against Sunderland and have had 15 in their last three matches against Chelsea. Chelsea had 11 corners against Sunderland and have only gone below five once in the last seven away matches (against Arsenal).
So in an important game under the lights, a corner-fest feels very much on the cards.
Finally, my Bet Builder centres on both teams scoring, both getting 3+ corners and both receiving a card. West Ham have had at least one caution in all of their last 10 matches (thanks largely to Lucas Paqueta), and Chelsea have only failed to receive a yellow card once in their last 10.
2.75pts – Over 9.5 Corners – 8/11 (Bet365)
1pt – BTTS, 3+ corners each & 1+ card each – 3/1 (Bet365)
1pt – El Hadji Malick Diouf 2+ shots – 2/1 (Bet365)
