The Saturday lunchtime fixture at 12:30pm GMT takes place at the London Stadium as West Ham look to make it back-to-back Premier League wins when they host Sunderland.
Odds Now football tipster Terry Foord breaks down the key angles and betting opportunities for the big match that kicks off the top-flight action this weekend.
Just when it looked as though West Ham were destined for relegation, they produced a vital win when it mattered most. Heavy home defeats to Fulham and Nottingham Forest, followed by a damaging 3-0 loss away to bottom-placed Wolves — Wolves’ first win of the season — had left them in serious trouble.
However, Nuno Espírito Santo’s side responded impressively last weekend with a crucial away victory at Tottenham, sealed by a last-gasp Callum Wilson goal. Notably, West Ham looked more balanced without Lucas Paquetá.
The midfield pairing of Mateus Fernandes and Tomáš Souček provided greater structure, while Crysencio Summerville, Jarrod Bowen and Pablo offered energy and directness in the attacking areas. It felt like a more functional and cohesive West Ham performance.
Sunderland also picked up a much-needed win, edging Crystal Palace 2-1 at home. That result ended a five-match winless run for the Black Cats, but it again highlighted a recurring theme — they are far stronger at home than on the road.
At the Stadium of Light, Sunderland are fifth in the table, unbeaten with six wins and five draws. Away from home, they drop to fifteenth, with just two wins and only five goals scored across eleven matches.
Régis Le Bris has been clear about where Sunderland’s strengths lie. Like Leeds and Burnley, they have built their hopes of survival around strong home form. However, they will want to start adding away points, and this trip to a West Ham side that consistently concedes chances could present an opportunity.
Sunderland dominated the most recent meeting, thrashing West Ham 3-0 on the opening day of the season — a result that left many Hammers fans stunned. That performance was emblematic of Sunderland’s strong home displays early in the campaign.
Looking further back, West Ham hold the historical edge, winning four of the last eight meetings and losing just once. However, all those fixtures predate 2018, limiting their relevance to the current match-up.
Goal trends are mixed. Over 2.5 goals has landed in six of West Ham’s last seven Premier League games and seven of the last ten at the London Stadium.
By contrast, Sunderland have seen under 2.5 goals in six of their last ten league matches and seven of the last ten at home. With just five away goals scored all season, a tense and nervy contest is very possible.
West Ham have conceded at least one goal in their last twenty matches across all competitions, which makes it hard to ignore “both teams to score”. Despite Sunderland’s struggles in front of goal away from home, I still expect them to find a way onto the scoresheet.
For the bet builder, I’m focusing on Crysencio Summerville. With Paquetá absent, Summerville has become West Ham’s key attacking outlet. I like him to register at least one shot on target and be fouled two or more times, given how central he is to West Ham’s play. I also expect the overall shots-on-target line to be comfortably covered in what should be an open game.
2pts – Both Teams to Score – 17/20 (Paddy Power)
1pt – Crysencio Summerville 1+ Shot On Target, Crysencio Summerville 2+ Fouled, BTTS & Over 4.5 Shots On Target Both Teams Combined - 3/1 (Bet365)
