Wolves vs Newcastle: Betting tips and analysis
Wolves vs Newcastle: Betting tips and analysis

Wolves find themselves in torrid form and are in dire need of a result to ease pressure on manager Gary O'Neil - but can they fend off a Newcastle side which is improving week-by-week?

Odds Now's Brad Walker takes a closer look at the fixture to see where the best value may lie at Molineux.

Tale of the tape

Wolves

To be frank, Wolves have been horrendous of late. The point picked up in their 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest last time out is the first they've claimed all season and ended a run of four consecutive Premier League defeats.

Finishing chances has been a major problem for the Midlanders. They recorded a higher xG tally in their previous home outing against Chelsea, yet somehow still finished on the wrong end of a 6-2 defeat.

Fowards Matheus Cunha and Hwang-Hee Chan can be a problem for any side in the division, but O'Neil will need his frontmen to display more of a clinical edge if they are to climb out of their dismal run.

Newcastle

The Magpies have made an impressive start to the new campaign, taking seven points from a possible nine. Newcastle's form has dampened the blow left by a frustrating summer transfer window, where they were handicapped by PSR restrictions and unable to bring in long-term centre-back target Marc Guehi.

Nevertheless, manager Eddie Howe will be glad to see the return of a central defender already on their books in the form of Fabian Schar. The Swiss international is available for selection once again after missing the last three games through suspension, following his opening day red card against Southampton.

Talismanic striker Alexander Isak is also off the mark, having netted Newcastle's winner in their 2-1 home win over Tottenham prior to the international break.

Wolves vs Newcastle: Betting tips and predictions

The away side will head to Molineux desperate to improve on what has been a woeful record at the venue in recent times. Newcastle have failed to win any of their last seven away matches against Wolves, though six of those did end in a draw.

Still, the Magpies haven't won on the road against the West Midlands since a 1-0 away victory in February 2017, back when both sides found themselves in the Championship.

Nevertheless, the added clinical edge of Eddie Howe's men pushes me towards backing the away victory. Newcastle have averaged just 6.67 shots so far in the Premier League this season, yet still boast a fantastic 20% conversion rate in front of goal.

Compare this with the efforts of the Wolves frontline, who have averaged 10 shots on goal only to return a measly 10% conversion rate.

Ultimately, I think the hosts' wastefulness in front of goal will cost them once again on Sunday afternoon. Sure, the Magpies haven't been at their best in this fixture in recent years, but their squad is arguably the strongest it has been in the Premier League since the turn of the century.

They were also without star striker Alexander Isak in their 2-2 draw at Molineux last season, yet the Swede should be available for selection this time around.
