Cameron Menzies speaks after beating Chris Dobey in round one of the 2025 World Grand Prix

Cameron Menzies admits he 'did something wrong' in record defeat to Chris Dobey at World Series of Darts

Cameron Menzies has confessed he 'did something wrong' in his record-breaking World Series of Darts Finals defeat to Chris Dobey last month.

Menzies set the record for the lowest average in the tournament's history when posting 66.85 in a 6-1 loss to the Geordie.

However, the Scot set the record straight in spectacular style on Monday night, dumping Dobey out of the World Grand Prix 2-0 with a performance much more akin to the impressive standards he has set over much of the last two years.

"I did something wrong in that game" – Menzies

Speaking to Darts Now at his post-match press conference in Leicester, Menzies admitted: "I know what I did wrong in that one.

"I don't want to say it here, but I did something wrong in that game. I made a mistake, I knew where I'd gone wrong and hopefully that's a learning curve for me.

"I'm trying on days like today to change a little thing and it's kind of worth it. Even though I'm a nervous wreck here, I won, so yeah.

"I'm just trying to make a few changes with regards to my lifestyle and stuff. Hopefully that will lead to more progress in the future."

Social media abuse 'hard to take'

Menzies' larger than life personality certainly brightens up the PDC stages but does mean he splits opinion among the game's fans.

And while the Scot accepts his personality may not be to everyone's taste, he has struggled with the torrent of abuse he has faced online after some high-profile defeats.

Menzies said: "I get a lot of abuse online and stuff, and deservedly so, because I've not performed well on TV.

"But [the nerves] are something that I've struggled with. So I was nervous there tonight but I've tried to deal with it.

I'm trying to take deep breaths and stuff, which you can probably see when I'm up there. It doesn't always work but I"m trying!

"When I first got my Tour Card and stuff, I really struggled with [the abuse]. It was horrible. Now I just delete it all for a few days.

"If I've had a stinker, like I did at the World Series or at the Grand Prix last year, I just go off it for a few weeks and that's the best way.

"The worst thing is when people tag you in it. Why tag me in it? I don't want to read abuse. I even got some abuse last week when I lost to Wessel [Nijman[ in the Players Championship the other day. I won't repeat what it was but it was bad.

"But no, I used to reply to them sometimes. Now I just delete it. Going out for a walk and staying off social media for a bit is actually quite refreshing!"

Menzies 80/1 for major dream

After his first-round defeat of Dobey, Menzies has been chopped with bookmakers into a best price of 80/1 (Sporting Index) to go all the way and seal a dream maiden PDC major in Leicester.

He faces Rob Cross in round two, where he has been priced as a 6/4 underdog –but in a format that threw up a three-figure odds winner in Mike De Decker last year, anything is possible.

Menzies isn't looking that far ahead, though admits he expects to feel less nerves going into his second game.

He added: "Obviously I want to win it. Who doesn't? But I feel like there's less pressure now because I've won that first game.

"If you look at the Matchplay, here last year...for whatever reason it is, I've not really performed on the stage and it's something I'm desperate to sort.

"Hitting that double to kick off under pressure is massive. Mike De Decker last year on his double 16s was so good and that was what won him the title.

"I always fear my doubles will let me down but they didn't tonight. I'm sweating like a pig but I'm buzzing!"
