It’s a London derby under the lights in West London on Saturday evening in a 5:30pm GMT kick-off as Chelsea welcome West Ham to Stamford Bridge. Both sides arrive on the back of consecutive Premier League wins and will be eager to continue that momentum.
Odds Now football tipster Terry Foord breaks down the key angles and betting opportunities for the big match that kicks off the top-flight action this weekend.
Chelsea continued their strong start under new manager Liam Rosenior at the weekend with a 3-1 victory away at Crystal Palace. It marked Rosenior’s fourth win from his opening five matches in charge, with the only blemish being the EFL Cup semi-final first-leg defeat to Arsenal.
While results have been positive, Rosenior will be concerned by the volume of chances Chelsea continue to concede. At home this season, Chelsea have posted an expected goals against (xGA) figure of 17.03 — averaging over 1.5 per match. That ranks as the fourth-worst home defensive xGA record in the league, with two of the three worse sides currently in the relegation zone.
That statistic will give West Ham encouragement, especially after being comprehensively beaten in this fixture just five months ago. In August, the Hammers collapsed after taking the lead, conceding five goals in under forty-five minutes. However, under Nuno Espírito Santo, there are signs that West Ham are finally finding balance and structure.
West Ham have looked far more cohesive over their last two matches, most notably during an outstanding first-half performance against Sunderland, where they raced into a 3-0 lead while completely dominating proceedings. January signings Adama Traore, Pablo Felipe, and Taty Castellanos have reduced the reliance on Jarrod Bowen, while the midfield partnership of Tomáš Souček and Mateus Fernandes has added much-needed stability.
As referenced, West Ham were heavily beaten in this fixture earlier in the season. That result was not an anomaly either. Chelsea have dominated recent meetings, winning eight of the last eleven encounters overall.
At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea have been particularly ruthless, winning the last five home meetings in a row. Scorelines across the recent head-to-head include 5-1, 2-1, 3-0 and 5-0 — all Chelsea victories. West Ham have not won at Stamford Bridge since 2019.
Goals have been a recurring theme. Over 2.5 goals have landed in each of the last five meetings, including four of the last five played at Stamford Bridge, suggesting another open contest.
I expect West Ham to put in a much more competitive performance than they did earlier in the season. That August defeat came at a time when they were defensively disorganised, whereas now they look far more compact and disciplined.
That said, Chelsea’s home xGA suggests they are still vulnerable, and I do expect West Ham to get on the scoresheet. My main angle is Chelsea to win with both teams scoring — Chelsea should have enough quality to take the points, but not without conceding.
In the bet builder, I’m again backing Crysencio Summerville, who continues to be West Ham’s most dangerous outlet. He landed the fouls angle in the Sunderland preview, and I’m happy to go back to him here. I’ll combine that with shot involvement and team shots on target in what should be a relatively open London derby.
2pts – Chelsea to win and both teams to score – 15/8 (Bet365)
1pt – Summerville 1+ shot on target, Summerville fouled 1+ times, both teams to score & Chelsea 5+ shots on target – 9/2 (Bet365)
0.5pts – Summerville 2+ fouls won, Summerville to score or assist, West Ham 4+ shots on target & Chelsea 6+ shots on target - 14/1 (Bet365)
