English football betting tips for Tuesday August 19th 2025

While the Premier League's opening matchday concluded on Monday evening, England's lower leagues continue to provide ample opportunity for punters to unearth value.

Our lower-league football tipster Matt Hill (@Matt_Hill93) picks out four goal-related selections from the Tuesday evening slate, which can be combined for an 8.9/1 four-fold with Bet365.

Football betting tips – Tuesday 19th August 2025

AFC Wimbledon vs Cardiff Under 2.5 goals - 4/6 (various)

AFC Wimbeldon continued their encouraging start to League One life last weekend when winning 2-1 at Reading, showing maximum efficiency in front of goal by scoring with both of their shots on target.

Johnnie Jackson's men built their promotion campaign last term on an imperious defence, conceding the least goals in League Two during 2024/25 – and the Dons were particularly resolute on home turf.

Early signs are that they will be just as tough to break down in tier three, having conceded just twice in their first three outings against capable opposition. Their clean sheet en route to defeating Lincoln 10 days ago was the 14th of their last 17 home league fixtures to see under 2.5 goals scored.

Tonight's visitors Cardiff remain unbeaten in all competitions and made it seven points from nine in League One when effortlessly brushing aside Rotherham 3-0 on Saturday in the Welsh capital.

However, the Bluebirds looked far less threatening in their solitary away fixture – a goalless draw with Port Vale – and they have similarly robust hosts to try and break down this evening.

While the favourites' class may eventually tell, it's hard to see this one being a goal fest and the 4/6 on under 2.5 match goals looks very solid.

Plymouth vs Leyton Orient over 2.5 goals - 22/25 (Unibet)

It's been a chastening return to League One for Plymouth thus far, with the Pilgrims still searching out their first point of the campaign.

Defeats to Barnsley (1-3), Bolton (2-0) and Lincoln (3-2) mean Tom Cleverley finds himself under pressure early in his Home Park reign, though the last of those outings did finish on a more positive note as they rallied from 3-0 down to almost snatch a point.

Though work clearly still needs to be done in the transfer window, this Argyle squad are far clear of relegation fodder and should start to see improvement in their results sooner rather than later.

Leyton Orient made the League One play-offs last term and, after suffering a disappointing 3-0 defeat at Huddersfield on opening day, have responded well since with a 2-0 defeat of Wigan and an impressive 2-2 draw with well-fancied Stockport.

Richie Wellens is still bedding in some new faces after losing several key players in the summer, including key creative influence Ethan Galbraith and prolific duo Jamie Donley and Charlie Kelman. Crucially, though, his side still look to have retained a sharp attacking edge.

Goals look on the cards here, with both sides showing frailties at the back in the opening weeks but also likely to view this as a winnable game, rendering a cagey affair unlikely.

Gillingham vs Chesterfield – BTTS No – 17/20 (William Hill)

Hopes were relatively high for Gillingham ahead of the new League Two campaign and while performances haven't exactly been thrill-a-minute, the Kent outfit remain unbeaten heading into tonight's home clash with Chesterfield.

Gareth Ainsworth's sides to have a reputation of being effective rather than aesthetically pleasing and there's no doubt that the Gills' ambitious owners – the Galinson family from America – would take a promotion at any cost after making significant investment into the club for little reward to date.

Chesterfield continued their perfect start at the weekend as two late goals helped them past 10-man Bristol Rovers 3-1, with Paul Cook's men increasingly looking like genuine title contenders this season.

Perhaps the most impressive element of the Spireites' performances to date has been the control they have shown, averaging 65% possession across their three league wins and conceding only one goal.

They will fancy their chances of bringing three points back from their long trip south this evening but a point wouldn't be a bad result either, whilst similar comments likely apply to the hosts who will prioritise defence first as usual.

All signs therefore point to a tight contest and the 17/20 about both teams not scoring offers up multiple potential winning avenues at an attractive price.

Carlisle vs Solihul Moors over 2.5 goals – 17/20 (Bet365)

Into the National League for this evening's final selection, where promotion hopefuls Carlisle will look to right the wrongs of a disappointing 3-3 draw with Boreham Wood on Saturday.

Mark Hughes' Cumbrians were way off the pace when going into the interval 1-0 down before blowing away the Wood with a devastating 20 three-goal minute blitz – only to then concede two sloppy late headers to throw away two points.

In a division where title hopefuls can afford precious few slip-ups, Carlisle must get back on track quickly and another home clash awaits with a capable Solihull outfit here.

The Moors held Sutton to a goalless draw on Saturday but a week prior were involved in a real end-to-end affair with Forest Green – a contest that eventually finished 2-2.

Ex-Bolton and Portsmouth ace Matt Taylor is in charge of the visitors and will no doubt be encouraging side to get after their lofty opponents from the off, given the defensive frailties on show last weekend.

But with the likes of Regan Linney, Luke Armstrong and Georgie Kelly in the Cumbrians' forward ranks, it's hard to see them not among the goals themselves – making the 17/20 on over 2.5 strikes of great appeal.
