Prolific football tipster Matthew O'Regan returns for another Odds Now piece, where he highlights which teams to back in the goals scored markets this weekend.
As if my longshot column wasn't enough for big-price punters to get stuck into, I have also picked out six best bets that make up a 50/1 goal acca to cheer on in the Saturday 3pm BST kick-offs.
Ipswich have made a slow start to life back in the Championship, failing to win any of their opening three matches as they aim for an immediate return to the Premier League. All three fixtures have gone under 2.5 goals—frustrating for overs backers—but the underlying trends suggest that may soon change.
In their last Championship campaign, 74% of Ipswich’s home games went over 2.5 goals, highlighting Portman Road as a reliable ground for entertainment. They now host a Derby side who have been involved in goals themselves this season, with two of their three league matches clearing the 2.5 line, alongside a 1-1 draw with Bristol City.
If Ipswich’s historic numbers are anything to go by, it’s only a matter of time before their matches open up. With Derby also contributing to high-scoring contests, this looks like a good spot to get on early before Kieran McKenna’s men find their scoring touch.
Millwall under Alex Neil were once a banker for unders backers, but this season looks very different. They opened with a 2-1 win at Norwich that showcased their attacking intent, before a 3-0 home defeat to Middlesbrough in a game that could easily have produced more goals at both ends.
A resilient 1-0 victory away at Sheffield United showed their defensive grit, but the sale of Japhet Tanganga to Bramall Lane has left them noticeably weaker at the back.
Going forward, however, Neil has plenty of firepower. The emergence of 20-year-old Ivanovic adds extra spark to a front line that already looks capable of scoring goals consistently this season.
They now host a Wrexham side who have been the league’s entertainers so far. All three of their league games, plus both of their cup ties, have seen over 2.5 goals, with the Red Dragons conceding at least twice in every match. Their attacking approach is fun to watch, but their defensive frailties make them vulnerable—especially away from home.
With Millwall’s attacking balance shifting and Wrexham’s chaotic style, this match has all the ingredients for another goal-heavy contest.
For the first of four non-league selections to round off the ACCA, I’m heading to the North East where Gateshead host Aldershot in what could be the most entertaining clash of the weekend.
Aldershot have become synonymous with goals under Tommy Widdrington. All five of their league games so far have produced at least four goals, with the Shots’ fixtures averaging a remarkable five per game.
They lost their opening three 3-2 to Altrincham, Boston and Eastleigh, but responded in emphatic fashion—thrashing Solihull Moors 5-1 and Morecambe 4-0.
Gateshead, three points better off, have also been involved in plenty of high-scoring contests. Their matches average just under four goals per game.
Defeats to Southend (3-0) and Rochdale (4-0) showed their defensive vulnerabilities, but they’ve also delivered at the other end—beating Eastleigh 2-0, edging Tamworth 2-1, and most recently pulling off a dramatic 4-3 win at Yeovil after coming back from 3-0 down at half-time.
Both sides look far stronger going forward than they do defensively, and with neither showing any signs of sitting back, this has all the makings of a goal-laden affair in the North.
AFC Fylde have never finished lower than 3rd in the National League North, and they currently occupy that same spot after five games. Under Craig Mahon—who impressed in his time at Curzon Ashton—the Coasters have looked dangerous going forward.
They’ve won four of their opening five, scoring 12 goals, but their defence remains suspect, conceding eight in the process. Every single one of their games has seen both teams score and over 2.5 goals land.
They now face newly promoted Bedford, whose matches have been equally goal-heavy. All five of their fixtures so far have gone over 2.5 with both teams scoring, and their games are averaging over 3.5 goals. While Bedford have only managed one win, their attacking intent ensures they contribute at both ends.
That makes this clash between Fylde and Bedford a perfect recipe for goals, with both sides showing consistent trends. In fact, across their combined 10 games this season, BTTS + Over 2.5 has landed 10/10 times.
Macclesfield stormed to the Northern Premier League Premier Division title last season, racking up over 100 points. Despite a turbulent summer—Robbie Savage departing for Forest Green and three key players leaving—the Silkmen have started this season strongly, currently sitting ninth and just one point outside the playoff spots.
Both teams scored in each of their first four games, though they failed to find the net in a 0-0 draw against Spennymoor, a match in which Macclesfield were reduced to 10 men in the first half.
They now host a Darlington side whose fixtures have been high-scoring so far, averaging nearly four goals per game. BTTS has landed in four of their five matches, with the only exception being a 3-0 win away at Alfreton, a side that has scored just five goals all season, one of the lowest totals in the league.
Across the combined ten games for both sides, BTTS has landed in eight. With Macclesfield’s attacking firepower and Darlington’s high-scoring tendencies, both teams to score looks like a solid pick.
Heading south for another goal-based pick to round off the ACCA, Hemel Hempstead host title favourites Torquay in what promises to be an entertaining clash.
The Tudors have found the net in all five of their matches this season, losing just once—a 2-1 defeat to Dagenham & Redbridge in a game the visitors arguably deserved less punishment in.
Under Lee Allinson, Hemel Hempstead have been strong at home, remaining unbeaten in their two league fixtures so far, and carrying over the momentum from a solid campaign last season. BTTS has landed in three of their five games.
Torquay, who nearly won the league last season, have been hampered by a leaky defence—a weakness that has followed them into this campaign. They’ve taken just one point so far from trips to Maidstone and Horsham.
However, both teams have scored in all five of their matches, and the last meeting between these two sides at the end of last season also saw BTTS land.
With Torquay’s attacking prowess and defensive vulnerabilities, expect goals at both ends when they travel to the Home Counties.
