For most, the international break is a dreaded time for many. Fans of Premier League or Championship teams have their weekends ruined and have to spend time with their significant others or, even worse, watch England bore them to death.
Well, not me – I am a sad, lonely pillock who loves non-league, so it is business as usual. Aren’t I so cool and quirky… (I’m so lonely).
I’ll be in the away end at Dagenham and Redbridge on Saturday, cheering on the mighty Worthing. So, with that in mind, let me treat you to a 15/1 treble specifically from step two of the non-league pyramid.
Chippenham. A small, quaint market town in the South-West. However, the Bluebirds' games are anything but. Gary Horgan’s side were one of the favourites for relegation and are struggling, sitting 22nd in the league.
Only Farnborough (15) and Tonbridge (14) have conceded more goals than Chippenham. They have conceded 2+ goals in 5 of their seven games.
Hampton and Richmond are the visitors to the Thornbury Surfacing Stadium and are looking to continue their unexpected start to the season. The Beavers are heading into a tenth straight year in the National League South and are making a damn good effort to gain promotion to the Premier League.
Alan Julian’s side currently sit third and have taken some impressive scalps already this season, beating Dorking (0-3), Dagenham and Redbridge (2-1) and Ebbsfleet (3-2), as well as holding Torquay to a 2-2 draw.
Hampton have scored 2+ in 5/7 and will be licking their lips at the prospect of facing a fragile Chippenham defence.
Farnborough matches have been full of goals this season, averaging a remarkable 4.14 per game, with all but one fixture seeing over 2.5 goals. Despite that entertainment, Spencer Day finds his side struggling in seventeenth place.
Squad depth remains an issue – only four substitutes were named in midweek against Chelmsford – yet it didn’t stop them springing a surprise with a 2-5 victory over the Clarets.
That result also highlighted the downside of Day’s all-out attacking philosophy. Farnborough have now conceded at least twice in five matches and currently hold the unwanted record of the league’s leakiest defence.
Newly promoted Dover, meanwhile, are thriving under Jake Leberl after sneaking into the Isthmian Premier League playoffs on the final day and securing an unexpected promotion. They have been a breath of fresh air in the National League South, driven by a lively attack spearheaded by the talented George Nikaj.
Dover have scored in every game so far, hitting twelve goals in total and netting two or more in five of their seven fixtures, including against Torquay and Dagenham & Redbridge. If the White’s continue their form, don’t be surprised to see them ben Dover the Farnborough defence.
In what many are billing as the el sea-creature-co (just me then?), Scarborough (The Sea Dogs) travel to Chester to face The Seals. It’s fair to say Calum McIntyre has not got the seal of approval from his fans, with one irate supporter confronting him in the tunnel after the 2-1 defeat at Worksop – holy heck.
His side bounced back with a battling 2-2 draw at AFC Fylde, meaning they are yet to keep a clean sheet this season, conceding 2+ in 5/7 games. Cue the visit of free-scoring Scarborough.
Jonathan Greening’s side are currently sat second in the league after four straight wins and 16 points from the last 18 available. These six games have seen them score at least twice, so the Sea Dogs will be barking at the prospect of facing a leaky Chester defence.
