Odds Now's resident non-league expert Matthew O'Regan returns with a plethora of fancies across this weekend's football action outside of England's leading divisions.
After parting ways with the steady, pragmatic Chris Millington, Halifax turned to Adam Lakeland following his successful stint at King’s Lynn. The 40-year-old has made an immediate impact, with his side sitting sixth after four straight wins – including an impressive 2-1 victory away at Rochdale.
Brackley, meanwhile, are adjusting to life in the National League after finally securing promotion. The Saints have been stubborn to break down, but back-to-back defeats – 1-0 at Solihull Moors and 2-0 at home to Wealdstone – suggest some cracks are starting to appear.
Their survival hopes will rely heavily on their home form, with all three wins so far coming in front of their own fans. Away from home, they remain winless – which makes Halifax being priced as underdogs look baffling.
I’ll preface this by saying Woking have been underwhelming, currently hovering just a point clear of the drop zone. That said, a 3-0 win away at Solihull Moors last weekend hinted at signs of life as they look to climb the table.
Truro are enduring the challenges of playing non-regionalised football for the first time in their history. They’ve managed just seven points, all at home – beating Boston United and fellow strugglers Morecambe, while also drawing 2-2 with nine-man Aldershot.
On the road, however, they’ve been dismal: six defeats from six, just one goal scored, and 14 conceded. At the current prices, siding with the hosts makes plenty of sense despite their inconsistent start.
Tamworth continue to punch above their weight. The Lambs impressed last season with their FA Cup exploits and near play-off push, and despite some key departures, they’re once again mixing it near the top seven.
Andy Peaks’ side have lost just once in their last nine league outings – away to an in-form York – and The Lamb Ground is proving a fortress, yielding 11 points from six matches.
Morecambe, by contrast, are in freefall. They’ve shipped 32 goals in 10 games, including 10 across their last two outings. Away from home they’ve collected a solitary point – a wild 4-4 draw at Solihull – while also suffering heavy defeats at Truro (5-0), Boreham Wood (3-0), and Aldershot (4-0). It’s hard to see anything other than another bruising defeat for The Shrimps here.
Both sides have made slow starts, with Buxton sitting 11th and Darlington 15th. John McGrath’s Buxton play some of the most entertaining football in the division, scoring 14 and conceding 15 so far – with both teams scoring in eight of their nine matches.
Darlington mirror that pattern almost exactly, with 16 scored and 14 conceded, and seeing BTTS land in eight of nine games. Goals look the order of the day here.
These two meet again after South Shields’ recent emphatic 4-1 FA Cup win. In the league, the Mariners have been relentless going forward, netting two or more goals in seven of nine matches. The strike partnership of Cedwyn Scott and Paul Blackett is arguably the strongest in the division.
Chorley remain in the hunt near the top, sitting third and just four points behind leaders South Shields. But their defensive issues on the road persist, with no clean sheets and at least two goals conceded in half of their away fixtures.
I'm backing that trend to continue this weekend.
Hampton & Richmond have been one of the surprise packages this season, sitting fifth after just one defeat in nine – away at Maidstone. The Beavers remain unbeaten at home despite facing strong opposition in relegated sides Dagenham & Redbridge, Ebbsfleet, and Torquay. They also claimed a solid away win at Dorking.
Slough, in contrast, are struggling. The club’s focus on developing young players often brings turnover, and this season it’s cost them early momentum.
Sitting 19th, just two points clear of danger, The Rebels have managed only two points from four away games – both against fellow strugglers Eastbourne and Tonbridge. A trip to high-flying Hampton looks a daunting task.
