Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur: Betting Odds & Prediction
Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur: Betting Odds & Prediction

Newcastle United host Champions League-chasing Tottenham Hotspur at St James' Park Saturday lunchtime.

Spurs recorded a 4-1 home victory in the reverse fixture earlier in the season. Kick-off is set for 12:30pm UK time.

Recent Form

Newcastle United

Despite a dismal away record, Newcastle have excelled on home turf this season, averaging 2.06 points per game from their 16 outings so far. They're also unbeaten in their last five games at St James' Park, where they've averaged an impressive average of 2.44 goals scored per match. Eddie Howe's side have found the net in all of their home fixtures, 44% of which have seen them net three or more.

Their defensive record is the main factor behind their languishing in eighth place, though Newcastle have been much more robust at home; their 1.25 goals conceded is a huge improvement on the 2.13 they've averaged on the road. 44% of Newcastle's home games have also seen them keep a clean sheet.

St James' Parl has seen plenty of action, with an average of 3.69 total goals scored in games there this term.

Tottenham Hotspur

The away side head to the North-East having won three of their last five matches, most recently securing a 3-1 home victory over Nottingham Forest. Their away form has somewhat faltered compared to their results at home though, with Ange Postecoglou's side averaging just 1.6 points per game in away fixtures.

Spurs have had little trouble finding the back of the net on the road though, averaging 2.06 goals per game so far. They've also scored in 93% of away matches this season, 73% of which have seen two or more goals from Postecoglou's men.

Defensive frailties have cost them, though; an average of 1.6 goals conceded on their travels is higher than the 1.31 they've shipped on home soil, and Spurs have conceded three or more in 20% of away fixtures this season.

Prediction

Spurs have undoubtedly shown promise under Postecoglou in the Australian's first season in charge, but their inconsistency throughout the campaign makes it hard to back them securing three points in this one. Newcastle have endured their own struggles but tend to come out on top at St James' Park, and will be buoyed by their resounding 6-1 home victory against Saturday's opponents last season.

The home side remain the sensible pick on this one.
