Punters Panel: Football betting tips for Saturday 20th September, 2025

What is your NAP of the football weekend?

MH - Just shy of even money about Plymouth to make it three League One wins in a row at home to Peterborough. Tom Cleverley’s men started dreadfully this term but victories over well-fancied Stockport and Luton should give them plenty of confidence. Posh beat Wycombe last time out for their first win of the campaign but the Chairboys have since sacked Mike Dodds – so you could say that result was more about their opponents’ underperformance. They look like a bottom eight side on all evidence thus far, to me.

AD - Unusual practice but I'm napping up a goalscorer. Wrexham have looked a mess defensively so far and I can't see a better best bet than backing Josh Sargent of Norwich to score anytime at 6/4 with Sky Bet. He'd netted in every game prior to last week's 1-1 draw at Coventry. If you want a result as an element of the NAP, I'll take Sargent with Norwich to win at 21/10 – but I'm happy with the 6/4.

GS - Grimsby to win at Barnet at 2/1 (Betfred). They've only lost once in their eight league games, and have been fantastic in the EFL Cup. Their depth is stronger than it was last season, so I don't see fatigue being an issue, certainly at this stage of the campaign, and the Bees rode their luck at Crewe last weekend. I'm stunned the price is that big!

FMP - Chelsea draw no bet at Old Trafford (8/11). I can’t go near any price about Ruben Amorim's side at the minute and Chelsea will be itching to bounce back after their midweek Champions League defeat. There’s just a gulf between the teams at the minute, in my opinion.

SR - I can’t see anything other then goals when Morecambe host Wealdstone this weekend, with Wealdstone games averaging four goals a game in their last four outings and Morecambe being involved in some big scoring games themselves. I’m happy with a BTTS and over 2.5 goals play on 365 at 21/20.

Which short-priced favourite would you be most keen to avoid backing?

MH - Luton at just over EVS at Lincoln. No thanks! I’ve not been particularly convinced by the Hatters so far, who are still looking to find their rhythm. Sincil Bank is not a place you want to go when you’re not at your best – Michael Skubala’s side have only lost once this term and that was away to AFC Wimbledon when they played over an hour with 10 men.

AD - Chris Wilder's return is likely to reinvigorate Sheffield United but I'd rather wait and see than back it to happen at odds-on immediately. The Blades were a shambles last Friday night and Charlton look solid.

GS - Doncaster at 16/19. I think Wimbledon will be a good double chance bet this season, even if they're yet to draw (come close a couple of times against big hitters, going down to late goals). I won't be betting against the Dons at odds-on this season unless it's in very special circumstances, because they're so well-drilled.

FMP - 4/5 about Notts County to beat Crawley makes no appeal whatsoever based on both the form and my own ratings of the two teams.

SR - Rangers at 8/13 is a brave punt currently in the Scottish League Cup. Especially after last week's 2-0 league loss vs Hearts. This could be Russel Martin's last game in charge and the Gers are worth avoiding.

Can you dig us out a goalscorer bet for this weekend?

MH - Stephen Duke-McKenna has been very lively for Harrogate this season, taking 17 shots and scoring three goals for the Railwaymen across eight games. How he can be 9/1 to score anytime against a poor Shrewsbury side is beyond me.

AD - I'm aware it's becoming a running joke, but having watched him land us 4/1 and 5/1 winners in the last two weeks while remaining second in the whole of League One for shots, Amario Cozier-Duberry at 17/4 at home to Wigan just has to be the bet with BetMGM. I'll also take Yeremi Pino of Crystal Palace at 4/1 to net at West Ham. He had three shots at home to Sunderland last weekend and five in midweek against Millwall.

GS - I'm gonna go with Promise Omochere to score anytime at 11/4 for Bristol Rovers at Colchester. He's averaging 0.41 xG per 90, and hasn't any penalties yet. Suggests the goals for him aren't far off.

FMP - Get your ladders out on Folarin Balogun vs Metz. I’d have his Monaco side even shorter so to score anytime (Evs), first (9/2), brace (9/2) and hat trick (20/1) are all worth a small investment.

SR - I don’t mind Boreham Wood's Zak Brunt at 10/3 with 365. He was in a more advanced role last time out vs Altrincham and I’d expect the same line up this weekend after impressing. That’s another game where I’d expect to see goals.

Any other quirky punts or angles you'd like to flag?

MH - I really do expect Chris Wilder to get fired into struggling Sheffield United quickly and a home game with Charlton could be the perfect starter. Nathan Jones’ visitors are solid but don’t have much attacking threat away from home. It’s unlikely the Blades will be at full pelt straight away though, so backing them to win with under 2.5 match goals looks worth a go at 11/4 (3/1 exchanges).

AD - I like Bryan Mbeumo – second in the league for shots so far – to take over 2.5 efforts at home to Chelsea on Saturday at 2/1 with Betway. Doubling up with over 2.5 for Pino gives you an 8.3/1 double with the same firm.

GS - I wanted to highlight the new managers. Chris Wilder is back in at Sheffield United, and he's revered there. Michael Duff, meanwhile, I think is an excellent League One manager and has gone to Wycombe. The trend I noticed last season was that when teams made an appointment that pretty much everybody was happy with, they won the next game and I don't think that's a coincidence. The Chairboys and Blades are both only a shade of odds-on, at 10/11 and 9/10 respectively, because of where they are in the league - but I think both win. You can get a nice double on that, paying 5/2 with 10 Bet.

FMP - Kocaelispor to win and Bruno Petkovic to score (10/3). I’m just starting to see enough signs from the newly promoted side that a home win against a distinctly average opponent is well within their grasp this weekend.

SR - I’ll stick with another goalscorer play. I wouldn’t have Ayase Ueda at 5/2 for an anytime strike this Sunday for Feyenoord. The Japanese striker is flourishing under Robin van Persie this season and I think the 5/2 on offer from Sky is generous.

Give us a rock-solid treble for Saturday's fixtures, please!

MH - Three others I like this weekend. Gillingham to win at Newport, Huddersfield to overpower Burton at home and Chelsea to beat Manchester United in the late kick-off. Pays over 7/1 with a few firms, that’ll do nicely.

AD - Both teams to score in Brighton v Tottenham, combined with wins for Portsmouth against Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield over Burton comes out at close to 3/1 with Ladbrokes.

GS - Sheffield United, Wycombe and Grimsby, which at the time of writing pays a best price of 9.37/1 with 10Bet.

FMP - Let’s keep it super simple with an over 2.5 EFL special. Norwich vs Wrexham, Cardiff vs Bradford and MK Dons vs Accrington all to produce three or more goals pays over 9/2.

SR - A goals treble for me! BTTS and over 2.5 goals in Morecambe vs Wealdstone, Boston vs Boreham Wood and Salford vs Swindon. You can get 8/1 for the treble on 365.
