Punters Panel: Football betting tips for Saturday 6th September, 2025

Can you give us your NAP from across this weekend’s football slate?

MH - Money has understandably come for England’s unders goal line against Andorra after some underwhelming early performances under Thomas Tuchel. But I think it’s probably gone too far now, and I like both the 10/11 on over 4.5 home goals and 15/8 on over 5.5 home goals [for England] with William Hill. Andorra were plucky on home soil in the reverse fixture, but an early goal for the Three Lions here should help the class gulf show at Villa Park, with Tuchel no doubt demanding increased professionalism following a surprise loss to Senegal last time out.

AD - I fancy Accrington to at least avoid defeat at Cheltenham, so I'll take them at 21/20 draw no bet with Ladbrokes. Michael Flynn's side have lost five and drawn one of their first six matches and rank very low across all underlying metrics. Accrington aren't a whole lot better, but have avoided defeat in three of five league games and are worth siding with against the worst team in the league.

GS - Leyton Orient are 4/6 to avoid defeat at Port Vale. They've not had the best fortnight, but I would regard them as a better team against a Vale side that have had a slow start to the league campaign, so don't mind going down the safe route this week.

FMP - As is my MO, I’ll go a bit rogue here and give you Benin to beat Zimbabwe in their WCQ at 5/4. The form doesn’t look fantastic, but they’ve had some impressive performances against several of Africa’s stronger sides in recent windows.

SR - South Shields look the business so far, so I’ll take 6/5 on a win and over one goal for them via a 365 bet builder. Scott and Blackett are a deadly combo in the NN, and I’d expect a couple of goals in this match.

Which favourite would you suggest punters should think twice about backing?

MH - I’m a big lover of Stockport under Dave Challinor, but I don’t think I’d risk them at Plymouth this weekend. The Pilgrims have had a rotten start to life back in League One, but are always a very dangerous side at Home Park and did beat Blackpool 1-0 in their last home game. I expect them to be up for it, and this one will be settled by fine margins either way.

AD - I certainly wouldn't want to back Notts County at odds-against at home to Fleetwood. County have only beaten Shrewsbury in their three home games this season, while Fleetwood have only lost one of eight in all competitions.

GS - Bolton at 5/8. They've started with one win in six games and face a Wimbledon side that are devilishly difficult to prize open, a bit like an old jar of pickles.

FMP - Sorry Matt, but I’m in no rush to back Carlisle at the minute! Truro have picked up four points in their last two after a tough start, and whilst this is a hell of a trip for them on Saturday, the momentum may roll on just a little longer.

SR - Ross County are winless in their four league games so far, so seem a little short at 4/7 to get the job done against an Arbroath side who have seven points from their opening four games, with their only loss coming against table toppers St Johnstone.

Can you give us an anytime or first goalscorer pick?

MH - I’ll keep it really simple and back Regan Linney to score first for Carlisle against Truro at just shy of 4/1 with Bet365. Linney is now the division’s top scorer with six goals in his first seven outings for the Cumbrians and has grabbed the opener in two of their last three games. An implied 20% chance he does so again at home to Truro, having netted a hat-trick in his last Brunton Park appearance, looks attractive.

AD - I've put up Amario Cozier-Duberry of Bolton on both of the last two weekends and, sorry, I'm going again. He had another five efforts at Blackpool last week and somehow ranks second for shots in the entire division without having scored yet. That can't go on forever, and I'm backing him at 4/1 with BetMGM.

GS - Micah Mbick is 10/3 to score anytime for Colchester against Crewe. Reasoning in the next answer!

FMP - All eyes on "Super" Scott McTominay as Scotland travel to Denmark! I like the 4/1 for the talisman to net anytime in a game that the Scots really need to get a result in to set themselves up in a winnable group.

SR - I’m happy to back Callum Paterson anytime at 15/8 this weekend. Playing as a central striker, he’s been in the goals of late. The two games he hasn’t scored in, he’s had five and four shots – missing a big chance in each. The chances will keep coming, and there’s a good chance he’ll convert this weekend.

Any other prop bets or quirky angles taking your fancy this weekend?

MH - I like the 11/4 on Barnet and Shrewsbury’s clash ending level. Barnet have found themselves frustrated at home so far this term despite dominating games and could be in for a similar fate here against a struggling visiting outfit, who got a 0-0 draw against Accrington to stop their rot last time out.

AD - I've flagged in my England v Andorra preview the 'score with right foot' market – with Harry Kane available at 1/1 when you chuck BTTS: No alongside it in a bet builder. I'd also back either of Jarrod Bowen (17/10) and Noni Madueke (8/5) in the left foot market if they start on the right-hand side, with both of those also partnered with BTTS: No in a bet builder.

GS - Mbick is an electric forward that scored 40+ youth goals in 23/24 for three different age groups, and was in and around the Charlton squad last year, even featuring in the Play-Off Final: so it's not just any old U21 lad they've loaned from Charlton. I would want him onside for the first few weeks, while the traders may be yet to cotton onto his talents. The 10/3 anytime gets you plenty of value, but for those who like the thrill of a longshot, take a little slice of the 100/1 on him to score a debut hat-trick. I just think there's a chance he's not going to be a marked man and may get underestimated because he hasn't played in senior football yet.

FMP - I think Azerbaijan are a touch underrated by the market against Iceland. BTTS, there is even money for a small interest.

SR - Yeovil vs York this weekend should be an interesting one. We’re only just in September, and both teams have already changed their manager! I’ll go BTTS at 5/6 on Ladbrokes/Coral for Maynard’s first game in charge for York and Dryden wanting to impress for Yeovil.

Seeing as it’s the international break, which player do you think currently represents the best value to make England’s 2026 World Cup squad?

MH - I’m sure the name that jumps off the page for all concerned is Jordan Henderson. It feels like no England fan wants him taking up a squad place, but also inevitable that Tuchel, like so many before him, opts to lean on Henderson’s famed leadership qualities as part of his wider collective. You have to say 5/1 is absolutely massive given the German’s comments about him being impossible to replace.

AD - The 5/1 available with Bet365 for Jordan Henderson is enormous and very much worth backing. Tuchel has referred to Henderson as an "obvious choice" and "impossible" to replace since he took over, words that describe a player who should be odds-on, let alone this price. I think Luke Shaw (5/1) has a good chance if he stays fit, too, but Henderson is the best value.

GS - Adam Wharton at 10/11. Just asked a Palace fan in my office and he says there's a 75% chance that he makes the squad if he's fit. Whereas the implied probability is 52.4%. That's a fair discrepancy!

FMP - My heart says 6/4 about Jack Grealish after his sparkling start in royal blue is a dead cert, but that’s the sentimental option. The correct answer has to be regrettably 5/1 about Jordan Henderson, who it looks like Tuchel will lean on to “be a good bloke in the dressing room” as he has done in all his squads to date. I’ll be switching off if he makes the pitch, but 17% chance that he’s at the World Cup? Think the digits are the wrong way round there.

SR - I’ll highlight two. Jarell Quansah at 4/1 (BetVictor) could be of interest with England lacking in the centre-half department. He’s recently been added to the squad, and this has gone under the radar. Also, Nick Pope at 4/1 (BetVictor) currently stands out. With James Trafford now competing with Gianluigi Donnarumma at Manchester City and Aaron Ramsdale still behind Pope at Newcastle, two of England's most likely back-ups could find game time very limited this season.
