In a fun new daily column here on Odds Now, our Head of Content Matt Hill will be offering up a betting tip from a football corners market.
Matt is our resident darts expert but is also fond of a wager on corners markets, where he believes value is often easier to unearth than in the hugely well-structured match winner markets.
You can follow along with Matt's profit and loss for the Punting Corner column on the bottom of each article!
So, one winner and one loser from Wednesday's two selections. Almere City did us proud, despite falling to a 3-1 defeat in the Dutch Cup, winning the corner count 5-3 against their top-tier opponents Telstar.
However, Celtic couldn't get the double up, managing only four corners at Falkirk – three short of the seven required. Given they all came in the first half, we were trading at 4/6 in-running but Martin O'Neill's men rather shut up shop to successfully protect a 1-0 lead. Shame!
Onto Thursday, where it's typically slim pickings on the quietest day of the footballing week (roll on the Europa Conference League return, I say). Still, one bet jumps out over in Germany...
A busy midweek in the Bundesliga concludes when struggling Augsburg host Union Berlin in what bookmakers are finding a tough contest to call.
The hosts are narrow 17/10 favourites, with Union a best-priced 37/20 and the draw at 11/5. Form certainly suggests the visitors are the likelier winners however, having taken seven points from their last three outings compared with a solitary point for Augsburg.
As well as offering a bit of value in the outright win market, I really do like Union's chances of winning the corner battle here.
Steffen Baumgart's men have only played seven away games in the German top flight this year but they are averaging 5.14 corners a game on their travels, which is a tally only bettered by three sides in RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich and Stuttgart – all members of the top four.
A physical side who like to play in a deep block and function with quick transitions, Union aren't afraid to go from back to front quickly, which probably goes some way to explaining their above-average love for a corner. Why tippy-tap it about when you can just bang a long ball in behind and battle like hell for it? Okay, that does them a slight disservice, but you get the gist.
This angle is further aided by the home side. Manuel Barm was only initially in interim charge after Sandro Wagner's December departure but got given the gig on a 'long-term contract' just after Christmas having impressed in his first two games as boss.
A hasty decision? Only time will tell. Baum didn't have the happiest return to action post-Christmas however as his Augsburg side were thumped 4-0 at Monchengladbach. That score probably wasn't reflective of the game entirely as they did spurn a couple of big chances – but giving up six of their own hardly inspires confidence.
It feels like a team still finding their feet in a transition period, whereas Union are arguably one of the best drilled sides in Germany. All things considered, I can't have the away side as clear underdogs on the corner front so let's take a 2pt win bet on them to win the line at a best-priced 16/11 (or 2.45 for decimal lovers) at Unibet. There's plenty of 7/5 around too at the time of writing, which looks perfectly fine too.
2pts - Union Berlin most corners vs Augsburg - 16/11 (Unibet(
Total staked - 2pts
Running total for Punting Corner = -1.7pts
