Tottenham host Chelsea at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday evening (17:30 kick-off) in a standout Premier League clash.
Spurs have pushed themselves into Champions League contention at this early stage of the season. The Blues, though, will be out to halt that momentum.
Terry Foord takes a closer look at the form, stats and best betting angles ahead of this London derby.
Tottenham moved up to third in the Premier League table after a comfortable 3–0 win away at Everton. More recently, they were tamely knocked out of the EFL Cup with a 2–0 defeat to Newcastle, but in the league, Thomas Frank’s side have been steady, winning three and drawing two of their last six, with only the loss to Aston Villa spoiling the run.
It’s no surprise Spurs took all three points at Goodison Park — their confidence on the road has been impressive all season. However, critics will point out that some of their recent victories have come against struggling sides such as Leeds, West Ham and Everton, so this clash with Chelsea will provide a far sterner test of their top–four ambitions.
Chelsea currently sit ninth in the table and share a similar pattern to Tottenham when it comes to form — far stronger away from home than at Stamford Bridge. They rank third in the away form table but only fifteenth at home.
Enzo Maresca’s side have endured some disappointing home results recently, including losses to Brighton and Sunderland, but a strong away win at Liverpool showed glimpses of the potential within this young squad.
Aside from that late 93rd–minute defeat to Sunderland, Chelsea had won four games in a row beforehand — including back–to–back victories in the Champions League. They also edged past Wolves in their most recent EFL Cup tie. The signs of progress are clear, even if consistency remains a work in progress.
Chelsea’s dominance in this fixture is undeniable. Tottenham have managed just one win in the last twelve meetings, with Chelsea winning nine during that run — including the last four in a row.
Goals have often flowed when these two meet — 23 in the last seven matches — but notably, Chelsea have conceded only twice in their last six home games against Tottenham.
Chelsea’s dominance in this fixture is hard to ignore — nine wins from the last eleven meetings and just one defeat. Even at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, they’ve taken five of the last six.
I’m expecting goals again here. The last two times Tottenham have hosted Chelsea, they’ve lost 4–3 and 4–1, and that pattern fits with Ange Postecoglou’s attacking philosophy. His sides commit men forward and create plenty of chances, but they can also get caught out the other way. Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals looks the logical starting point.
From a player angle, I’ll be keeping an eye on Micky van de Ven. As someone who has him in my dream team, I’ve been impressed with his output lately — three shots in his last two matches, seven in total this season, and two goals to show for it. He’s also managed a shot in both league meetings with Chelsea, so backing him for another attempt on goal appeals at a decent price.
2.75pts – Over 2.5 goals – 8/11 (Bet365)
1.25pts – Van De Ven to have a shot – 6/5 (Bet365)
1pt – Chelsea to win and BTTS – 7/2 (Bet365)
0.5pts bet builder – BTTS, over 2.5 goals, Chelsea most cards & Vicario 2+ saves – 11/4 (Bet365)
