It’s West Ham taking on Liverpool in the first of two Sky Sports Sunday games in a 2:05 pm GMT kick-off at the London Stadium. Two clubs that are both looking over their shoulders in the Premier League right now.
After another dreadful defeat for Liverpool in midweek, Odds Now football tipster Terry Foord investigates whether there could be more pain on the horizon for Reds manager Arne Slot.
West Ham picked up a point away at Bournemouth last week in a match they were initially cruising, leading 2-0 before being pegged back. Despite surrendering the win, Bournemouth dominated large spells, so it will still be seen as a point gained against one of the league’s strongest home sides, who are now W4 D2 on their own patch this season.
Since Nuno Espírito Santo has had time to fully implement his system, West Ham have steadily improved in both performance and results. The Hammers are unbeaten in three matches and sit sixth in the form table over the last four games. That said, home form remains a concern with just one win from six at the London Stadium, something that will need addressing quickly.
Liverpool, meanwhile, arrive under real pressure. Wednesday’s 4-1 Champions League defeat at home to PSV marked a ninth loss in their last twelve matches across all competitions. That run is simply not good enough for the reigning champions. Most alarming is the defensive fragility, with ten goals conceded in their last three matches, including fixtures against Nottingham Forest and PSV.
Several of Liverpool’s high-profile summer signings have either underperformed or struggled with injuries. Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz arrived for a combined €270 million but are yet to justify that investment consistently, while defensive additions Milos Kerkez (€47m) and Jeremie Frimpong (€40m) have both had difficult starts to life at Anfield.
This fixture has been a nightmare for West Ham in recent seasons. Liverpool have won eight and drawn one of the last nine meetings, with the Hammers not tasting victory in this matchup since 2021.
Goals are usually guaranteed. Over 2.5 goals have landed in all of the last seven head-to-head meetings, with both teams scoring in six of those seven. The same trend appears in recent form, with over 2.5 goals landing in seven of Liverpool’s last eight Premier League matches and all of West Ham’s last four.
Despite Liverpool’s dreadful recent form, I have a horrible feeling — as a West Ham fan — that we may see a response here. Time and time again, Liverpool turn it on against West Ham, regardless of form or circumstances.
I’m backing Liverpool to win with both teams scoring. West Ham have found the net in six of the last seven head-to-head meetings, while Liverpool’s defensive issues should offer the hosts enough encouragement to contribute again.
Both sides have conceded two or more goals in more than 80% of their last five matches. West Ham are allowing far too many shots on target to realistically keep a clean sheet — Bournemouth managed ten, Burnley seven, while Newcastle and Leeds both registered four or more.
For player-based angles, Dominik Szoboszlai leads Liverpool for shots on target this season, while Callum Wilson has started to hit form since finally being given a consistent run up front for West Ham.
