Canada Team News

Jesse Marsch will be hoping to guide Canada to their first ever win at a World Cup finals here in front of an expectant home crowd but does have some injury issues to contend with, particularly at the back.

In goal, it still remains unclear whether Dayne St Clair or Maxime Crepeau will get the nod. The latter missed the 2022 World Cup with a broken leg but is seen by many as the likeliest No1 – however, minutes have been split between the pair in recent warm-up matches.

Star man Alphonso Davies has been riddled with injury in recent times and a hamstring strain means the Bayern Munich left wing-back is a huge doubt for this opener, while first-choice centre back Moise Bombito also appears unlikely to start this one. The Nice defender broke his leg last October and Marsch says his latest issues are discomfort relating to that issue rather than a fresh injury.

The midfield looks fairly set with Tajon Buchanan and Liam Miller favourites to start out wide with Stephen Eustaquio and Ismael Kone nailed on for central berths. Up front, Juventus forward Jonathan David will carry his nation’s primary goal threat, with Cyle Larin’s fine finish to the season with English Championship outfit Southampton likely to see him deployed alongside.

Canada Predicted XI vs Bosnia & Herzegovina (4-4-2): Crepeau; Johnston, De Fougerolles, Cornelius, Laryea; Buchanan, Eustaquio, Kone, Millar; David, Larin.

Bosnia & Herzegovina Team News

In a hammer blow to Bosnia’s plans for this opening contest, talismanic striker Edin Dzeko’s participation appears in significant doubt having sustained a shoulder injury which saw him miss training on Tuesday.

It goes without saying that the Bosnians are a far weaker attacking threat without the veteran and boss Sergej Barbarez must make a big call on whether to risk Dzeko or opt for an alternative. His logical replacement, Haris Tabakovic, is also returning from injury so it could open the door for Ermedin Demirovic to be the sole striker with talented Bayer Leverkusen-bound attacking midfielder Kerim Alajbegovic just in behind him.

Beyond that, Bosnia will operate in a fairly rigid defensive unit, but it’s hard to be certain how former professional poker player turned national head coach Sergej Barbarez will assemble his personnel.

Tarik Muharemovic is a central defender to watch having attracted interest from several Serie A giants recently, while Premier League fans will remember Sead Kolasinac who is assured a spot at full-back or wing-back depending on how his side set up.

At this stage, a lot of Bosnia’s XI remains guesswork with Barbarez always happy to mix his tactics up to suit a particular contest.

Bosnia & Herzegovina Predicted XI vs Canada (4-4-1-1): Vasilj; Dedic, Muhamerovic, Katic, Kolasinac; Bajraktarevic, Sunjic, Tahirovic, Memic; Alajbegovic; Demerovic

Canada vs Bosnia & Herzegovina betting analysis – Matt Hill

Bosnia unlikely to roll over for Canada’s big occasion

"When assessing Group B in our pre-tournament content, I was pretty cold on the prospects of Bosnia and Herzegovina in terms of progression to the latter stages of this tournament. But you do have to give them credit for what they do well – frustrate opposition, stay compact and offer a strong counter-attacking threat.

"Canada will go hunting the ball in this contest with a home crowd desperate to see their nation win at the World Cup finals for the first time. Jesse Marsch is an emotional character who should be relishing such an occasion and I have no doubt he’ll have his team fired up for a fast start.

"Pressing is key to Marsch’s approach and this fixture could well revolve around how effectively Bosnia are able to play through the opposition lines when put under pressure. Though it is an ageing squad, Bosnia do have some bright, young attacking lights – particularly Kerim Alajbegovic, who I think could potentially be the difference-maker for the underdogs.

"Injuries to two key players in the Canadian backline are a real concern. Alphonso Davies and Moise Bombito aren’t 100% ruled out of this one at the time of writing but look in real jeopardy of missing out, and their replacements would represent a real drop in quality if so.

"Even if Edin Dzeko misses out, Bosnia have a seasoned Bundesliga forward in Ermedin Demirovic to make clever runs in behind and I’m struggling to see a world where the Europeans won’t get two or three clear cut chances, even if they do have to weather a few storms.

"All told, I can see goals here and the odds against quote about both teams scoring looks a solid way into this one. That bet landed in six of their last eight qualifying matches – the only exceptions being two wins to nil against San Marino – and also hit in both of their penalty shootout play-off wins, which were preceded by 1-1 draws against Wales and Italy.

"A draw wouldn’t be an absolute disaster for either side here to be honest, so a small sprinkle on the 1-1 correct score also appeals."
