Germany Team News

Germany arrive at this World Cup looking to continue the progress made under Julian Nagelsmann, who has steadily rebuilt confidence around the national team after a difficult period that included back-to-back group-stage exits in 2018 and 2022.

The former Bayern Munich boss has no shortage of attacking talent at his disposal and will be expected to oversee a comfortable qualification from Group E before attention turns to sterner tests later in the tournament.

As ever with Germany, efficiency is the expectation. Die Mannschaft have traditionally made light work of lesser opponents at major tournaments and this opening fixture presents an ideal opportunity to settle into the competition before clashes with Ivory Coast and Ecuador.

Nagelsmann appears set to name an attack packed with star quality. Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala are now firmly established among the world's most exciting creative players, while Leroy Sane continues to provide pace and directness from wide areas. Arsenal striker Kai Havertz, fresh from scoring in the Champions League final, is expected to lead the line as he looks to add to his 22 international goals.

Further back, Joshua Kimmich remains one of the side's most influential figures, while Jonathan Tah and Nico Schlotterbeck are likely to form the heart of the defence.

The only slight concern surrounds veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who has recently returned from a calf issue. The expectation is that the 40-year-old will be fit enough to start, although Germany's medical staff are understandably taking no unnecessary risks at this stage of the competition.

With Germany expected to dominate proceedings, Nagelsmann may also have one eye on managing workloads. Should his side establish a healthy advantage, plenty of substitutions could follow as the coach looks to keep his key men fresh for the challenges ahead.

Germany Predicted XI vs Curacao (4-2-3-1): Neuer; Kimmich, Tah, Schlotterbeck, Brown; F Nmecha, Pavlovic; Sane, Musiala, Wirtz; Havertz.

Curacao Team News

Merely qualifying for the World Cup finals ranks as one of the greatest achievements in Curacao's sporting history and the Caribbean nation arrive in North America with absolutely nothing to lose.

Home to a population of only around 140,000 people, Curacao are comfortably one of the smallest nations ever to appear on football's biggest stage. Yet they have earned their place on merit and deserve enormous credit for navigating qualification against far larger and better-resourced opponents.

Much of that success has been overseen by legendary Dutch coach Dick Advocaat. The former Netherlands, South Korea and Russia boss initially stepped away from the role last year due to family health concerns but has since returned, much to the delight of supporters. In doing so, the veteran tactician will become the oldest manager ever to take charge of a World Cup match.

Advocaat has built a side that is organised, disciplined and difficult to play against, though there is no escaping the fact Curacao lack depth compared to the majority of teams at this tournament. That is particularly true in defensive areas, where injuries or suspensions could quickly become problematic.

There is, however, some recognisable quality within the squad. Former Aston Villa midfielder Leandro Bacuna captains the side and is expected to line up alongside his brother Juninho Bacuna in midfield. Further forward, ex-Manchester United youngster Tahith Chong has emerged as one of Curacao's most dangerous attacking weapons, scoring three times in his first six international appearances.

The Blue Wave are realistic enough to know progression from this group would be a remarkable achievement. Their objective here will simply be to stay competitive for as long as possible and enjoy the occasion against one of world football's traditional powerhouses.

Curacao Predicted XI vs Germany (4-3-3): Room; Sambo, Obispo, Gaari, Floranus; Comenencia, J Bacuna, L Bacuna; Chong, Gorre, Antonisse.

Germany vs Curacao betting analysis – Matt Hill

“This is the widest-priced match of the entire World Cup – and possibly in the tournament’s history. If Curucao were to take anything off Germany here, it would undisputedly be the biggest surprise we’ve ever seen at football’s greatest tournament.

“So, for punters, it’s more a case of how much dominance the Germans will showcase – and whether they will chase a cricket score or simply ease off the gas once the job is done.

“My angle in here would be centred around the favourites wanting to get the job done early, so they can enjoy the benefit of resting some key players for what is a physically demanding month or so coming up.

“It’s virtually impossible for leading nations to be knocked out before the group stage and any minutes that star players can be rested for is a bonus. If Germany can kill this early, they’ll have that pleasure ahead of much tougher tasks vs Ecuador and Ivory Coast.

“We’ve already seen a few games tail off badly in the second half with conditions playing their part. Brazil vs Morocco springs to mind – electric first 45, pretty dour second 45. Germany won’t mind following suit IF they can get the heavy lifting done quickly.

“Of course, Curucao won’t be planning on just rolling over. But there’s a real gulf in class here and with outstanding attacking midfielders like Wirtz and Musiala able to break the lines at will, it’s hard to see the minnows lasting much beyond 20 minutes without being breached.

“If that first goal goes in early, I suspect more will follow. The -1 and -2 first half handicaps look well worth a play at EVS and 3/1 respectively.
