Arsenal emerge as new bookmakers' favourites to win the Premier League

The Premier League outright betting market is showing no sign of calming down in the opening weeks of the new season, as bookmakers moved to make Arsenal their new favourites to win the league title.

It was another weekend of chaotic action in the top flight of English football. Chelsea kicked things off on Friday night with a resounding 5-1 victory away to a struggling West Ham, having initially fallen behind in East London. Arsenal also hit the net five times in their thumping win over newly promoted Leeds.

Tottenham caused the shock of the round with a 2-0 success away to Manchester City. Liverpool rounded off the weekend's action with a dramatic last-gasp 3-2 win away to 10-man Newcastle on Monday night.

Gyokores fires the Gunners to the top

Two goals from summer signing Viktor Gyokores, along with a brace from Jurrien Timber and a goal from Bukayo Saka, contributed to the win that saw the Gunners move to the top of the Premier League table.

As a result, the majority of bookmakers have made Mikel Arteta's team joint favourites with Liverpool at 7/4, with some bookies even going as far as the make the London club stand-alone favourites.

Despite picking up two wins from their first two league games of the season, Arne Slot's team are failing to convince punters that they have what it takes to retain their Premier League crown this season.

Pretenders to the crown lie in wait

Several teams have started the season positively. Tottenham are gaining admirers under Thomas Frank after winning both of their opening league games this season.

Spurs looked fearless in their 2-0 win over City on Saturday. A goal apiece from Brennan Johnson and Joao Palhinha sealed yet another win over a City side they seem to have a spell over.

It's a result that has seen bookies cut Tottenham's title odds to 25/1, having been three figures ante post. The price on Spurs finishing in the top four, meanwhile, is now no bigger than 3/1.

Chelsea's emphatic win on Friday night has also caught the attention of the bookies. The Blues are now available at 8/1 to win the title, and can be found at a best price of 8/13 for a top-four berth.

Wolves knocking on the relegation door

At the other end of the table, it's a much more grim outlook for Wolves.

Vitor Pereira's side suffered a 1-0 loss away to Bournemouth, leaving them down in 19th place. Wanderers are now 15/8 to be relegated having shown little positive signs in their first two outings.

It's not looking much better for another established Premier League team in West Ham, either.

Their implosion against rivals Chelsea this weekend has left Graham Potter's side rooted to the bottom of the table, now listed at just 15/8 to drop into the second tier.

Bookmakers are still expecting both Burnley and Sunderland to be relegated back to the Championship, with best-price quotes of 2/5 and 8/13 respectively. The Clarets inflicted a 2-0 defeat on the Black Cats, but the result appears to have had little influence on either side's survival chances for the bookies.

However, Leeds can now be found at a best price of 12/5 to be relegated, despite their heavy loss away to new league leaders Arsenal.
