Steven Gerrard is no bigger than 5/4 to complete a sensational return to the Rangers dugout after the Scottish giants finally parted company with Russell Martin on Sunday night.
The Gers drew 1-1 with Falkirk earlier in the day which proved the final nail in the coffin for Martin, whose disastrous time in charge saw just one win from seven league fixtures, a humiliating 9-1 Champions League qualifying exit at the hands of Club Brugge and two subsequent defeats in the Europa League.
Bookies have been quick to price up his potential successor and Gerrard, who enjoyed a memorable three-year stint in charge at Ibrox which culminated in an undefeated SPL title win in 2020-21, is a best-priced 5/4 with Ladbrokes, Coral and BetVictor to seal an Ibrox return.
The Liverpool legend ended his first stint in Scotland when Aston Villa came calling and has more recently been managing in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ettifaq, who he left in January after 18 months in charge.
He would certainly be a popular choice among Rangers fans, having helped end a period of Celtic dominance during his last stint.
However, it remains unclear whether or not he is actively considering the role.
Gerrard’s availability is likely to be of great interest to the Rangers board but if he does not fancy a return, another out-of-work boss is also being strongly linked in the form of Sean Dyche.
The ex-Burnley and Everton gaffer is the early 3/1 second favourite (Ladbrokes/ Coral), having left his role on Merseyside in January after the Toffees were taken over by the Friedkin Group.
That link may not be the most tenuous given Dyche worked closely with Rangers’ head of recruitment Kevin Thelwell during his time at Goodison Park.
Reports have suggested that Dyche would take the role if offered it and his brand of no-nonsense football may be exactly what Rangers fans are looking for following the disastrous efforts under Martin to deploy a possession-focused philosophy.
Other names in the mix include former Gers defender Kevin Muscat at 5/1 (Bet365), veteran SPL boss Derek McInnes at 12/1 (William Hill) and former Champions League-winning tactician Rafa Benitez at 14/1 (Bet365).
Ex-Australian international Muscat, who played for the club between 2002 and 2003, was said to be high on the board’s wishlist when Philippe Clement got the job in October 2023 and that line of enquiry could well be opened again.
Meanwhile, McInnes is currently in charge of surprise league leaders Hearts and it remains to be seen whether he would jump ship given the excellent start his current employers are enjoying.
Benitez would be seen as a more ambitious option, yet reports have suggested the ex-Liverpool boss is open to the idea of managing the Glasgow outfit.
