Odds Now's golf tipster Ross Kilvington returns with his latest betting preview, looking ahead to this week's Tour Championship on the PGA Tour.
As always, Ross provides a brief overview of the tournament and offers up three betting tips for punters looking for an interest.
The top 30 players in the FedEx Cup standings travel to East Lake this week for the Tour Championship and there is a big change from last year to factor into equations.
Between 2019 and 2024, the player with the most FedEx Cup points would start at 10-under, while second began at 8-under and third at 7-under. This sliding scale continued throughout the field, until those between 26-30 started the event at even par.
From this year onwards, however, it was announced that all players at the tournament would start at even par, meaning the winner of the FedEx Cup is the lowest scoring player after four rounds.
With big money on offer, the field is predictably stacked at East Lake. Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and J.J. Spaun occupy the top three spots, but the likes of in-form Europeans Tommy Fleetwood, Robert MacIntyre and Justin Rose are also inside the top ten.
East Lake has been home to the Tour Championship since 2004 and was the home course of Bobby Jones.
It promises to be an exciting event to finish the playoffs. So, let's take a deeper look at three players who could do well in Atalanta this week.
Scheffler is the man to beat, there is no doubt about that. The American won yet again last week at the BMW Championship.
But at 6/4, his odds are far too short to advise a wager, despite his stunning season. As such, I’m taking the 8/1 on McIlroy instead – a man tailor-made for the big occasion.
The Northern Irishman finished a credible 12th at the BMW, setting himself up nicely for a big showing in the grand finale at East Lake.
Since 2012, the 36-year-old has won three times here, as well as finishing second and securing a further five top-tens at the course. It clearly suits his style.
With the Ryder Cup just around the corner, McIlroy will be looking to make sure his game is in sublime condition for the biennial event which so often seems to bring out his majestic top level.
Scheffler may be the overwhelming favourite, but don’t count out the five-time major winner at East Lake this week.
Tommy Fleetwood has knocked on more doors than an Amazon delivery driver in recent months.
His missed cut at the US Open is the only time he hasn’t made the weekend at an event, while the Englishman has also registered seven top-ten finishes in a run both fabulous and painful in equal measure.
At the Travelers Championship, he bogeyed the last after holding a one-shot lead heading into the final hole, eventually losing out to Keegan Bradley.
A couple of weeks ago, Fleetwood finally looked as though he had buried that disappointment by holding a two-shot advantage in the Fedex St Jude Championship with just three to play.
But his bogey-par finish meant he missed out on a playoff between Rose and Spaun – marking another case of missed opportunity for the popular Englishman.
Of course, scar tissue builds with every near miss, but this week looks as good a chance as ever to get the monkey off his back.
Fleetwood ranks third on the PGA Tour for total Strokes Gained (SG), while also ranking second for SG Tee-to-Green. If he can get his putter firing at East Lake, the rest of his game suggests he has every chance of emerging victorious.
Given the fact there are only 30 players in the field this week, Cameron Young is doing some heavy lifting as our ‘longshot’, priced at a modest 28/1.
Young, like Fleetwood, was considered one of the best players on Tour yet to win a title. But fortunately for him, that changed at the Wyndham a few weeks ago as the American obliterated the field to win by six shots.
He has since finished fifth and 11th in his two subsequent starts and is certainly looking in the mood to add a second PGA Tour title to his resume in quickfire fashion.
Young is statistically one of the best putters on the tour, ranking first for putts over 25 feet, making nearly 10% of his attempts.
The 28-year-old is also targeting a place on the Ryder Cup team next month and another solid showing this week could very well see him wrap up his spot for Bethpage.
2pts win - Rory McIlroy - 9/1 (AK Bets)
1pt EW - Tommy Fleetwood - 14/1 (Betfred - 1/4 odds top 4)
0.5pt EW - Cameron Young - 30/1 (Betfred - 1/4 odds top 4)
