Races Now's Harry Fowler is on hand to guide you through the three-day Cambridgeshire Meeting from Newmarket with insight and betting tips – starting here with the opening card on Thursday afternoon.
As another summer flat season draws to a close, we return to the Rowley Mile racecourse for the 2025 Cambridgeshire meeting, where three brilliant days of racing await us.
The action kicks off on Thursday, with the feature race being the Tattersalls Stakes – a Group 3 contest for two-year-olds.
Seven runners get the meeting underway in this maiden. Of those with previous experience, two stand out with strong claims: the Godolphin colt Del Maro and Maltese Cross for William Haggas.
Maltese Cross impressed me on debut, but his run and pedigree suggest he’ll be better suited to middle distances.
Del Maro is the one I want to be with. Back on quicker ground, I expect him to show his true ability. He ran well last time at Doncaster and the combination of conditions, experience and William Buick taking the ride could be decisive.
Harry’s Selection – 1pt win Del Maro 15/8 (Bet365)
Nurseries are always tricky with such unexposed horses getting their first marks.
Monoceros will no doubt be popular for Appleby and Buick. The step up to a mile should suit, but I haven’t been overly impressed with his first two runs, and a rating of 87 feels harsh.
I prefer Dark Shore, who has run well in three decent maidens that have worked out nicely. His best effort was second time out over an extended seven furlongs, and I think a mile will be ideal for him.
Harry’s Selection – 1pt win - Dark Shore 9/4 (Bet365)
This looks a competitive 11-runner handicap. Favourite Royal Velvet has progressed steadily but can be temperamental, and the drop back to six furlongs is another question mark, so I’m happy to oppose her.
Lady Roxby caught my eye. Since changing stables at the start of the season, she’s thrived, with some of her best efforts coming over more than the minimum trip.
Last time out, she was a strong second at Yarmouth on just her second try at six furlongs. She runs off the same mark here, despite being due a 2lb rise. I think there’s more to come, and she looks to have a great chance.
Harry’s Selection – 1pt win - Lady Roxby 11/2 (Ladbrokes/Coral/Betfred)
The feature on day one brings together nine promising two-year-olds. The market is led by Distant Storm, representing the Appleby-Buick team, who will be looking to bounce back after a disappointing run in the Acomb.
One I’ve liked for a while is Wechaad. His second run was full of promise, and last time he finally got his head in front at the fourth attempt – in some style too. That win could give him the confidence to kick on.
This is a quality field, but he makes plenty of each-way appeal.
Harry’s Selection – 0.5pt each way Wechaad - 7/1 (SkyBet/PP – 3 places)
Palladium is a short-priced favourite after winning comfortably at Salisbury following a gelding operation. However, I wasn’t convinced by that victory as the form looks weak, while conditions here pose further questions. At 11/10, I’m happy to take him on.
Live Your Dream is my pick, despite a 732-day absence. Saeed bin Suroor usually has his runners ready, and this trip should suit him perfectly.
The eight years old looks much better value bet than the shaky favourite.
Harry’s Selection – 1pt win Live Your Dream - 3/1 (General)
Nine line up here, including several with points to prove.
I am looking to an unexposed one in the field, that being Shrimp Shady. Only had three runs to his name and the most recently was a distant third at Kempton but that was following almost a year off and think there will be a lot more to come from this lad.
The mark of 80 I think could look rather lenient and Oisin Murphy is back on board ,which is always a positive.
Harry’s Selection – 1pt win Shrimp Shady - 11/2 (Bet365)
The day ends with the biggest field in this competitive mile handicap.
Gorgeous Mr George was second at Yarmouth last week and runs off the same mark, but he tends to save his best for that track.
I prefer Just Typical. He was second on the July Course two starts ago despite a slow break, then made no mistake when winning comfortably at Redcar. He carries a 5lb penalty here but looks a horse firmly on the upgrade.
Harry’s Selection – 1pt win Just Typical - 7/2 (Bet365)
1pt win - Del Maro (1.50pm) - 15/8 (Bet365)
1pt win - Dark Shore (2.25pm) - 9/4 (Bet365)
1pt win - Lady Roxby (3.00pm) - 11/2 (Ladbrokes/ Coral/ Betfred)
0.5pt EW - Wechaad (3.35pm) - 7/1 (Sky Bet/ Paddy Power - 3 places)
1pt win - Live Your Dream (4.10pm) - 3/1 (Various)
1pt win - Shrimp Shady (4.45pm) - 11/2 (Bet365)
1pt win - Just Typical (5.18pm) - 7/2 (Bet365)
Total staked - 7pts
