Illegal d'Ainay has his second chase run today, dropping in grade this time.
He ran okay on his chase debut and seasonal reappearence last time out, where despite not jumping with any fluency, he still ran on to finish fifth – beaten 11 lengths by the winner Lord Accord. That doesn't look bad form now with the well beaten sixth Art Deco winning easily next time out. Admittedly, that success did come over a good few furlongs further (3m6f).
His sole career win to date came at this track over the minimum trip. He absolutely bolted up that day, beating the since ill-fated Global Esteem by five lengths. He was pulling away at the line also, suggesting he had plenty left to give.
But since then, some stiff tasks have been set. Bumping into the likes of 118-rated Clap Of Thunder (finished second), 138-rated Ma Shantou and 133-rated Excello (finished third behind those two mentioned). He also finished fourth behind 134-rated Guard Duty and 122-rated Hartington – only beaten six lengths on that occasion.
This lad runs off a mark of just 112 today, dropping into Class 4 company. His point-to-point form suggests he should cope with the switch to fences fine, especially off this type of mark and I'd expect him to be both fitter and wiser for that first spin over the larger obstacles last time out.
San Pedro has now dropped back to what looks a workable mark with a reappearence run under his belt.
He goes today off 99, which was exactly where he found himself when getting up over this course and distance back in February. That day, he beat Malago Rose by half a length – form which was boosted when the third-placed Lumi Plugin went in next time out.
This horse also clearly has a liking for Plumpton, with form figures at the track of PU431114. The Chris Gordon yard are firmly amongst the winners at present, too.
With that reappearence run under his belt and now back in the right grade, over the right trip, I can see him going very close in this weak-looking affair. Everything is in his favour and I think he should be leading the market, in truth.
