The handicapper has dropped King Turgeon 1lb for his seasonal reappearance run last time out, which means he arrives today armed with a much nicer racing weight in what is a slightly stronger race.
This likeable seven-year-old won this race off a 3lbs lower mark last season. He made most of the running on that occasion despite being headed after making a mistake at the third last fence. He had to sit and suffer for a period, waiting for room. But once he got a clear run, he reeled the leader back in before pulling three lengths clear of Our Power to win a shade cosily. The runner up from that renewal went on to place in both the Ladbrokes and Scottish Grand National – clearly he's beaten a good horse there.
This fella also managed to place in the Somerset National last time out off a 3lbs higher mark than this carrying 12st in weight. He finished just three lengths behind the winner Collectors Item, back in third place. He was giving 7lbs in weight to the winner that day, and also 23lbs in weight to the runner up.
He's not shown much since then, struggling in competitive races off a lofty mark. However, he's still a young and unexposed horse in this sphere. He didn't run that badly on reappearance when beaten eight lengths and I'd expect him to strip fitter for that.
The popular Busselton arrives here just 1lb off his last winning mark with a first-time visor applied today.
It's a very interesting addition for me. Horses from his father's bloodline sparingly use this type of headgear – but when they do, they usually improve significantly. Hopefully this can be the case with this lad, too.
He's still a good few pounds below his peak winning mark (won the Kerry National off 142), running off 137 this time. He's got a bit of experience in these type of races too. He's 3lbs below the mark he ran off in this race last term when finishing a fair sixth behind Stumptown.
JJ Slevin is booked to ride, which also catches the eye. If the headgear has the desired effect, I think he can take this race before maybe going mighty close in the big one in March. That would be nice to see given how well-supported the horse was last time before a flat showing.
