Lee Butterworth (@ButtysBets on X) is back to offer his daily betting selections from the National Hunt sphere right here on OddsNow.com.
Lee flags up anything that takes his eye each weekday morning, with all stakes tracked for P/L purposes.
Let's see what he fancies today!
Whilst on form, his stablemate Doctor Steinberg is probably the one to beat here. Plus the fact that the selection jumped poorly raised to this grade lto. I think that could prove to be a blessing with his current odds looking generous here.
Prior to the last run. He had won his previous 2 runs. Jumping very slickly on each occasion. Admittedly, he was a short price for each race. But still visually impressive.
The Grade 3 win was the pick of those efforts. He made all the running. With no other horse laying a glove on him at any stage. He coasted home to a 6L win over Whimsy. With an 18L gap back to the horse in 3rd place. He was giving 6lbs in weight to Whimsy also. The aforementioned managed to place in a very competitive mares handicap at this meeting yesterday.
His bubble was burst lto in the Future Champions Novice hurdle at this course over Xmas. He didn't jump with any fluency at all. Beaten 8L by the winner Skylight Hustle, back in 3rd place. Obviously, that race is run over the minimum trip.
He's hiked right up in distance this time. Based on RPRs, this fella holds the fav. The prospect of heavy ground is also appealing to this fella. His Dam won twice on heavy ground. The 2nd of which was when she stepped up in trip. If he can put that last run behind him and see out this extra distance. I think he could topple the fav here.
Makes his chase debut today. Given a mark of 110. 2lbs below his opening handicap mark.
He ran no race at all on handicap debut lto. The jockey kept him in behind. Let him do his thing. To my eye, that run was purely for fitness. With it being his first run in 314 days and also his first run since having wind surgery done. It's easy to see why he would have needed the run.
He won his sole P2P run. Beating Clondaw Royale just over 2L. Giving him 10lbs in weight also. A few in behind are rated higher than this fella under rules currently (15L 4th rated 115, 21L 5th now rated 113, pulled up Roadlesstravelled now rated 137 and a Grade 2 winner under rules). His dam is also a 2 time P2P winner, which bodes well for him switching to the larger obstacles.
He managed to win 1 of his 3 runs over hurdles. Beating even money fav Whatsyourproblem 3/4L, with Moonshine Man a further 3L away in 3rd place. He also managed to win one of his bumper runs. Beating Birdies Beau just over 1L. The runner-up is now rated 122. So clearly no mug either.
On the balance of things. This mark looks workable. He's likely to be a nice price here. I think he could well outrun his odds and give those at the top end of the market something to think about.
Drops back in trip today. Coming into this race off the back of a fall lto.
Handicapper has also dropped him 1lb for the last run. Which is fair given he was weakening when falling at the final fence in what I feel was a stronger race than this.
He ran his best race to date over fences over this trip in the Rising Star Novices Grade 2 on just his 2nd chase run. Beaten just over 2L by the winner Blueking d'Oroux, back in 3rd place. The winner went on to run in the Kauto Star Novices' nto. Even though he was well beaten there. Clearly, the yard thinks something of him to throw him into the deep end nto.
Despite finishing 4th of the 5 runners at Doncaster on his 3rd chase run. He ran better than the finishing position would suggest. Plus bumped into some useful performers. He was only beaten 4L by the winner Jordans Cross. The aforementioned went up 4lbs for that win, and won a class 2 handicap nto.
Also, the 2nd from this race (Go West) won a handicap off 135 at Musselburgh yesterday. Even the 3rd from the race (Zurich) had won his previous 2 races prior to this run, the 2nd of which was a decent handicap at Cheltenham off a mark of 125.
He goes right-handed this time. His form figures on right-handed flat tracks read 213. So should find the nature of this track to his liking. He's only 4lbs above the mark he won off over hurdles. The fact that he's already been given a higher RPR in just 4 chase runs than he ever achieved over hurdles (9 runs over hurdles, winning 2 of them) tells you he can cope with this type of mark.
