The handicapper has dropped Mister Mahler a further 1lb for his last run and he drops back a couple of furlongs for this spin at Catterick today.
He's now back on the same mark that saw him finish a decent second over course and distance (though his jockey claimed 3lbs on that occasion). He bumped into Bravethewaves there, beaten three lengths in the end. But he was giving 7lbs in weight to the winner that day, who came out and franked the form by winning off a 6lbs higher mark two runs later.
His seasonal reappearence run was solid enough, finishing fourth behind Couldbeaweapon off a 4lbs higher mark than this. Beaten eight lengths by the winner, that form has also worked out okay with Couldbeaweapon going in again off an 8lbs higher mark next time out. Also, the seven-length third has won twice since.
If he repeats that form here, he's the one to beat for me – despite still being a maiden under rules.
Joyau Allen is one of two Paul Nicholls-trained runners in this race, with Harry Cobden opting to ride this fella.
The selection is very lightly raced under rules. Just the three runs to date, two of which were bumper runs and one a first spin over hurdles. He won first time up on bumper debut, beating Saint Anapolino by just over three lengths. That horse is no mug – he's now rated 129 over hurdles.
He then bumped into one on his final bumper run when beaten eight lengths by the winner Bill Joyce. No disgrace there, given he was trying to give 14lbs in weight to the winner. Bill Joyce is now a 134-rated hurdler.
He was sent off an unfancied 8/1 shot on hurdling debut a few weeks back off the back of a 622-day break. He was far too keen for his own good there, eventually blowing up three hurdles from home and pulling up not long after. THe on-course vet reported he bled from the nose, which would explain the below-par run.
He should strip fitter for that outing here though and has been given another 40-day break. Harry Cobden keeps the faith and I can see why.
The horse is a full brother to the high class Envoi Allen. I suspect he will make into a nice chaser in time if they can keep him sound. But in the meantime, I think he can pick up a race or two over the smaller obstacles en route to chasing.
