Butty's Bets - horse racing tips for Tuesday December 2nd 2025

12.52pm Southwell - As Legends Have It - 13/8 (various)

As Legends Have It switches his attention to the larger obstacles today following a solid spin around Cheltenham last week.

The 6-year-old didn't manage to get his head in front in five hurdle runs, though did nab one win from two bumper outings prior to those. He's been most consistent under rules however, with form figures of 2123323 – yet to finish outside the places.

He was set some stiff tasks over hurdles, too. Probably due to the fact he won his bumper easily. He bumped into some smart Novices along the way, including a runner-up effort to the talented Califet En Vol. He also ran a solid race last time out, going down a length to A Poi De Nam.

Dropping back in distance today, this trip will be no problem for him. Point to point experience should come in handy, while he's also bred to make a useful chaser. His Dam, Easter Legend, was a half decent chaser herself, winning three of her four runs and recording an RPR of 150 when winning a listed chase on her final career start.

Trainer Ben Pauling also has a cracking record with chasers at this venue over the past five seasons, sending out seven winners and seven placed efforts from 27 runners. It would have been profitable to a serious tune even just backing those runners blindly (+31.47 to a level stake). So, there's a lot to like here.

2.52pm Southwell - Eaton Anne - 5/2 (various)

Eaton Anne steps up in trip for the first time under rules following a fair reappearence run at this track last time out.

He managed to get his head in front twice last season in handicap company in very contrasting styles. A 22 length win at Lingfield was an absolute rout, while his follow-up success at the same track was achieved in slightly more dramatic fashion thanks to some Sean Bowen mastery.

You could say he fluffed his lines on seasonal reappearence at Southwell last time out. Sent off 5/4 favourite, he finished a well beaten fourth, beaten 9L by the winner.

Being honest, he was never involved on that occasion. Ridden cold out the back of the field in an attempt to sneak into the race, the horse hung left under pressure when trying to latch onto the leading group. He weakened out of it jumping the final hurdle, with a lack of recent run possibly kicking in.

Bowen jumps back into the saddle today, replacing 5lbs claiming jockey Lewis Saunders. There's no jockey riding better than Sean at the moment and he knows exactly how to keep Eaton Anne up to his work. I think he offers some strong value against the favourite here.
