Irish-trained gelding Gather Yourself remains a maiden under rules after 12 runs – three of which have came in bumpers and a further nine over hurdles. So clearly, backing this lad comes with risks attached.
However, there's no doubt his form is on the improve since stepping up to trips of 3m or further. He ran a solid race back on home turf in Killarney over this trip off a 4lb lower mark. There, he was beaten only seven lengths despite giving chunks of weight away to the first two home (15lbs to the winner, 11lbs to the runner up).
Then, last time out, he ran well again off the same mark he carries today. Running over a marginally longer trip, he finished a solid third to Found A Diamond, beaten 12 lengths. A claimer was doing the steering there but there's a significant upgrade in the pilot ranks today, with Sean Bowen booked.
That in itself looks significant and it's a curious bit of placing indeed. Trainer Cian Collins does not send many over to Ayr and this is his sole runner on the day. I suspect this lad is here to win.
Big Zouk has his second run in a handicap here, stepping up in trip slightly for his chase debut.
He's only had two runs for the Nicky Richards yard to date, both coming this season. It's fair to say he hadn't shown much promise over obstacles for his old handlers but the change of scenery has brought about some improvement.
His first seasonal outing wasn't anything spectacular, beaten 25 lengths into fifth place over a trip that appears to be far too short. I also suspect he needed the run on that occasion. Next time out, he stepped up to a similar trip that awaits today and ran much more effectively, finishing an 11-length third to Snowrocco – who boosted the form when going in again next time out despite being hiked up 9lbs.
Big Zouk now switches his attention to the larger obstacles and I think he'll thrive here, having won his sole point-to-point impressively enough. He beat a now 113-rated horse in Followcato there, who won easily off that mark on his last run. On that form alone, a mark of 96 looks ridiculously lenient for the selection.
