Happy And Fine comes into this contest off the back of a win and drops back in trip, having been hiked up 4lbs for the last run.
Tom Broughton maintains the partnership here, after doing the steering for that gutsy win last time out. On this occasion, however, he is able to claims 5lbs – something he wasn't able to do the last day. Which essentially makes him 1lb lower than his recent winning mark today.
The horse is one win from one prior visit at this track over fences. Running over two furlongs shorter, he got up to beat Lord Kerak by half a length – though that pair were over 40 lengths clear of the remainder.
He also managed to win off this mark at Haydock just over 2 years ago, beating Regal Blue comfortably having made all the running on that occasion. I think he could well do the same here if allowed his own way out in front.
Tara Halls could try pester him for the lead, which could pose a problem. But I feel that horse probably has his eye on other races which could just give the selection his own way on the sharp end.
At The Oche is a lightly raced gelding with only four runs over hurdles to date.
It's fair to say he bumped into one on hurdling debut, beaten just over two lengths by the winner Jaminska back in second place. That form looks significantly better now with the winner subsequently placing in a Grade 2 novice hurdle next time out, before placing in a listed mares hurdle race more recently.
The selection managed to get his head in front next time out, too. He was sent off a strong 1/5 favourite that day and made his own running. There were a few mistakes but he still had plenty enough class to beat Clondaw Fame by a half length.
He's subsequently ran slightly below bar (based on market expectations) the last twice having been sent handicapping. He only went down a half length in the first of those, so it doesn't offer up too much concern.
Sam Twiston-Davies climbs back in the saddle today. He's only ridden this lad once over hurdles, which resulted in a win. He's now down to a mark of 104, which is ridiculous based off that form behind Jaminska.
Finally, the Twiston-Davies yard are an impressive two wins from seven outings with hurdlers at this venue.
