Butty's Bets - horse racing tips for Wednesday December 17th 2025

1.58pm Newbury - Mighty Bandit - 10/3 (various)

The handicapper has nudged Mighty Bandit up 2lbs for a solid chase debut effort last time. Sean Bowen is booked to ride, taking over the reins from Sam Twiston-Davies.

Admittedly, this is quite a trappy little race. Highlands Legacy did this column a favour when hacking up on chase debut. The ultra consistent Torneo is also in here with a chance. So, I expect this is one of those races that will work out well in time, no doubt.

This fella ran a race full of promise on chase debut over this course and distance. He was sent off an unfancied 50/1 shot and was held up in rear early on. When he tried to make headway, he made a mistake at the fifth last fence, which immediately put him on the back foot. But to his credit, he didn't let that stop him from running a blinder, running on into second place behind the unexposed Mambonumberfive. Beaten just two lengths in the end, he was also giving 2lbs away in weight to the victor.

A mark of 129 looks workable given the strength of his hurdling defeat of Lark In The Mornin, who went on to win the 2024 Fred Winter at the Cheltenham Festival.

Sean Bowen being booked today looks a huge positive to me and this is the yard's sole runner of the day also.

2.33pm Newbury - Knight Of Allen - 3/1 (various)

Trainer Jane Williams won this race with Saint Segal last season and I think she could well do the same with this unexposed young chaser, given his solid chase debut run last time out.

It took Knight Of Allen three runs to get off the mark over hurdles, winning a 4yo affair at Chepstow with plenty of authority by beating Authentic Legacy just under five lengths.

He was set some stiff tasks in his next runs, however. Bumping into the likes of Wade Out and We're Red And Blue (finished a five-length third behind those two), then Steel Ally and Beat The Bat (finished a three-length third behind those two). They are all useful horses who are rated much higher now.

He did manage to get his head in front again at Ffos Las on his final run of last season when beating Ben Solo (another winner for the column recently) comfortably, with just under three lengths seperating them at the line. To be fair, Knight Of Allen could have won by further if he wanted to.

His chase debut was solid, as mentioned above. Off the back of a 203-day break, he just bumped into a race fit rival in Coco Mademoiselle. Beaten just over 1L by the winner in the end. That was a solid effort indeed behind a vastly more experienced chaser.

This track ought to suit him given his form figures on galloping tracks read 112 and I think he's a bet today on these terms.
