Buzz Iceclear hunts a second consecutive victory at Wetherby today having shed his maiden tag last time out three weeks ago. He'll carry 5lbs more today as as result of that success but there's reason to think that's a manageable task.
He didn't show a great deal in his first three runs over hurdles. Placing third on debut but 13L behind the winner, his subsequent two efforts were non-events with connections seemingly having their eye on handicaps.
Sure enough, the selection popped up at Ayr at the start of this month off a 257-day break and, stepping up to 3M for the first time, duly defied market expectations by landing the spoils at 13/2.
He beat a Gordon Elliott-trained horse into second that day in Themanintheboots. That horse has since franked the form, winning a handicap in Ireland by 7L last Monday.
Given how far the pair pulled clear from the remainder of the field at Ayr, that 5lb rise for today's selection suddenly looks rather lenient. Trainer Mark Walford does very well in handicaps with his younger horses and this looks like yet another smart bit of placing.
Paddy O'Mahler goes off a 2lb higher mark today after a near miss on his chasing debut a fortnight ago.
That was his seasonal reappearance and hinted at a brighter future over the bigger obstacles, having only managed one win in 15 hurdling outings. That success did come over today's course and distance, however, with today's pilot Peter Kavanagh also doing the steering.
Last time out was a cracking effort, finishing 3/4L behind Roe And Co when trying to give the winner 10lbs. The winner that day already had the benefit of two chase runs too – including a success. So, that certainly wasn't a bad effort.
Logic dictates Paddy O'Mahler will strip fitter today and having amassed some precious initial experience over fences, this looks a prime opportunity to break his duck nice and early at his favourite track.
