Horse racing betting tips for Saturday, September 27th 2025

The Cambridgeshire Handicap at Newmarket takes centre stage this weekend. There are also two Group 1 races in the Cheveley Park Stakes and Middle Park Stakes from the same three-day meeting. Not forgetting the racing taking place at Haydock. Lots to ponder for our seasoned horse racing tipsters.

Our Punters Panel are here once again to answer the big questions and deliver their expert insights and horse racing betting tips.

Introducing the Odds Now Horse Racing Punters Panel

Before we get stuck in, here’s a little bit more on the four men answering our key questions this week:

Adam Smith - A betting industry veteran, flat lover and one half of our Races Now double act.

Harry Fowler - Another of Odds Now’s regular racing contributors, currently working in the industry.

Aflie Bennett - SD enjoyer, Regular race goer/ punter and horse owner. Works within the industry.

Craig Talbot - Owner of Ursa Major Racing, providing affordable and rewarding syndicates for racing fans.

Nice and easy start, who wins the Cambridgeshire?

AS: I’ve thought for a couple of months that Fifth Column is an ideal Cambridgeshire and backed him today. You won’t see an easier short head winner than him last time at York. Really was impressive and I like him.

HF: I fancy Real Gain, remember watching the run at Goodwood last time out and the trainer said seemed rather bullish. He ran a great race to be third after 367 days off and this 9 furlongs looks perfect for him.

AB: Greek Order for me this has looked the plan for a long time. Lightly raced, progressive. He’s the type who’s always been talked about as a Group horse — and this is often the stage they use to prove it. Strong traveller, should stay 9f well, and he’s in the right hands with Stoute and Rossa. If he gets a decent draw (high pls) and the race sets up right, I think he goes very close.

CT: I do quite like the chances of Fort George each way. Marhaba Ghaiyyath could certainly outrun his odds.

The first of two Group 1s on Saturday. Who do you fancy for the Cheveley Park?

AS: True Love is simply the wrong price at 4/1 and tipped by both SD and myself on our Thursday YouTube show. She’s quick. Ground is perfect. And she’s had a nice break since her last run.

HF: I have been a huge fan of Royal Fixation and don’t plan to jump off that train. She is around 7/4 at the moment but I do expect that she will drift due to the O’Brien fillies. So will be playing on the day once we have BOG.

AB: RF is the easy answer but I will go America Queen, She looks special. Explosive early pace, but she’s not a burn-out merchant — she settles into the race and then goes again. Her debut win showed a touch of class and I’m happy to ignore her run last time out, i think she reverses the form as long as she settles.

CT: American Queen to turn the tables with the favourite for me.

And a Group 1 for the two-year-old colts in the Middle Park, who are you backing?

AS: Wise Approach is way to short on what he’s done so far, which isn’t a whole lot. Surely he’ll drift. Coppull pulled way too hard last time and blew his chance. Impressive at Goodwood before that. He’s a good each way bet here.

HF: I can’t help but think that Wise Approach will be winning this. He is clearly well thought of to skip what would’ve been a nice Group 2 in the Gimcrack and take on Gstaad and Venetian Sun in the Prix Morny. I think that piece of form is the strongest on offer. Coppull is the danger, don’t think that was a true showing last time and is better than that.

AB: Easy to say the top 2/3 but I will go rogue. Five Ways might be underestimated. He’s improving rapidly, and his last run over 6f showed he’s got some gears. The top of the market is strong, but there’s still a question mark over some of the favourites. If Five Ways finds another 2-3 pounds, he’s in the thick of it. Nice price at 16s which I have take.

CT: Wise Approach will win it I'd say but Havana Hurricane looks to be a good each-way bet and that will do for me.

Two races from Haydock on ITV, any bets up north?

AS: Not for me this weekend. Concentrated on Newmarket. It would be nice to see no track bias on the straight track for a start.

HF: In the handicap at 3:15 I will be backing Tilted Kilt, his effort last time out was very encouraging. He has been a disappointing at times but he’s ran twice at Haydock and finished a good second twice, looks like he saves his best for here and at 14/1 worth an each way play.

AB: Woolhampton for me. He was rode quietly at Newcastle and thought they might be plotting him down the line (they did) won going away at Ascot and the penalty doesn’t put me off him. I have taken 6s and think he runs another big one.

CT: Woven was desperately unlucky last weekend at Ayr. If he backs that level of performance up, he could gain well deserved compensation.

What is the best equine performance you have seen in person with your own eyes?

AS: Very lucky to have seen many in person. Frankel 2,000 Guineas the absolute standout. I also had a great view for Battaash’s first Nunthorpe. Sprinter Sacre regaining the Champion Chase was brilliant, even for a flat man like me.

HF: The bar was set rather high for me from early, as one of my first ever race days was going to Newmarket to see Frankel win his 2000 Guineas in probably one of the best ever performances.

AB: Al Boum Photo's second Gold Cup for me. It was the race that got me hooked, winning back to back Gold Cups in itself was special and he won it at a proper slog but my god that roar was like nothing I have ever seen. What a horse he was!

CT: Master Minded's Champion Chase he was absolutely electric. Denman's Hennessy, too. Completely different performances but equally magnificent.

Cheltenham was in the news this week with some minor changes to the customer experience. What would you change in terms of the actual Festival races?

AS: Number one and two on the list of most ever Cheltenham Festival odds on shots has occurred in the last two years. There’s many, many contributors to this, but that would be my top priority - more competitive races.

HF: I think they’ve made some good steps off the track but still are a bit away from where it needs to be. On the track, I think keeping to four days and seven races I don’t see how anything will be resolved. It seems the solution to the problem previously was just put more handicaps in and you’ll get more competitive racing, which is a very short term fix and only brings more problems down the line.

AB: Bring back a 2½-mile novice chase. There’s a massive gap between the Arkle and the Brown Advisory. Some quality horses end up running over the wrong trip or skipping Cheltenham altogether. A middle-distance novice Grade 1 would bridge that and give the sport more variety. Not every future Gold Cup horse needs to slog 3m in heavy ground as a 6yo.

CT: Nothing. I think it's spot on. No need to pick holes in such a great week!
